So I have had a half built PC since Christmas because I didn't have a desktop but ended up without all the parts. So today I had some extra money and bought my GPU and PSU. I turn it on to find it say "HARD DISK FAILURE. INSERT HARD DISK AND PRESS ENTER. Unplugged it and put it back in; nothing. Did tons and still nothing. I really wanna set this up. Thanks!

check if your hdd detected on bios/uefi? check the boot priority? boot from cd/usb with windows xp/7 pe and check your boot partition readable and active?

Wait, do I need windows on a usb right away? If so I am a complete idiot. And it's on the HDD. Lol I'll get back to you later when I have it on a USB and have it ready to try again.

Running windows pe from cd/usb is the best way to check if anything wrong with your hdd partition or files, download hirenbootcd and run mini windows xp, i'm using it every time to check for computer problems, make sure you change the sata mode to ide first before boot to mini windows xp so it can detect your hdd in the os

Um. I have no idea how to do any of that stuff. :( I'm so uneducated with this. And I was planning on putting Win10 on it.

if your hdd detected on bios/uefi and your boot order was correct but it's still not working, then you can try to repair/reinstall windows from dvd/usb or you can check what's wrong with your hdd by boot from windows pe on dvd/usb. Just google to create windows 7 PE to your DVD/USB.

Do I need to buy Windows 7 to make the PE or do I just need the ISO?

Are you able to see the HDD in the BIOS? If it's not listed in there then it's possible that the HDD could be faultly. Usually you can get into the BIOS by pressing "DELETE" or "F2" depending on your motherboard.

It's listed. Says WD blah blah blah blah.

Also when it's running I can hear the HDD.

That might be the cause of the error message. You will need to install windows on that drive before it can boot. To eliminate the fact that your boot order could be wrong go into the BIOS again and select the device you want to boot off. Some boards may allow you to press "F12" on bootup to select the device. Here is the link to HironsBoot: http://www.hirensbootcd.org/files/Hirens.BootCD.15.2.zip

No, You have to install the operating system onto the HDD for it to boot unless you are for what ever reason installing it onto a USB (which i am unsure if you can) If you are waiting for Windows 10 then install linux or an unregistered version of windows 7 / 8.1 onto the the PC for the time being.

Oh ok. And by Windows 10 I meant the Technical Preview. Will that work?

Yea it should work. I don't see why it shouldn't. That's if there is no fault with the HDD. If it can't install or Wont boot after the operating system is installed i would suggest running HironsBoot and scan the HDD with either Vivard or Seagate SeaTools. If you need help with how to get to those tools let me know and i can see what i can make up for you.
