Hello forum,

I have a question.

I currently have a dual channel ddr3 8gb G.Skill Ripjaws-X set up and I was wanting to upgrade to 16gb.

for my first question-

could I just add a single 8GB dim to my mobo to make it a triple channel or would it be better to purchase another dual channel kit?

i want to do this because later down the track if i need more ram, i have 1 free slot that i can use to add another 8gb.

Another question-

i decided on my colour scheme after i built my pc (I know, how stupid) and bought red ram when my colour scheme is now green.

could i add the GSkill Sniper because its black and keep my old ram in there.

this means that i have red and black ram in my pc. but it is from the same brand so i think it should work.

Thanks heaps in advance!!!

Rhyalex

Buying another dual channel set would be best. Haven't tried running just three sticks of RAM in a computer. If you do add though, make sure the speed, timing, and cas latency match. It's more important to have the speed match, but you will have overall better performance with all of the specs matching. RAM will work using multiple vendors, I've done it many times in several builds, but again, make sure the specs match. I once had a DDR2 setup with a 1GB and 2GB stick with different speeds, and I had some pretty bad instability. As @Whorax said, your best help would be in the CPU, Mobo, and RAM subforum. I'd recommend having a mod or admin move this thread there. And if it gets moved there, make sure a user there corrects my information if it is inaccurate. I'm by no means an expert.

If your motherboard supports triple channel in the first place, that could work.

Ram isn't inherently set up for channels but kits are advertised to work in their preconfigurations. Other configurations not advertised aren't guaranteed to work.

Moving thread to CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory--please post in the correct sub-forum in the future.

The motherboard doesn't support triple channel. Adding the single stick would just have the ram run in single channel.

Thanks guys

i shall purchase another dual channel 8gb kit.

would this one work?

Thanks

Probably. I'd suggest sticking to 2x4GB kits to have the ram running in dual channel though.
