Ok. I bought a barebones PC on TigerDirect last year on an amazing promo. It came with an Ultra LSP 650w psu. After reading some horrible things about Ultra products, and the fan in mine seemingly imitating a jet engine, I'm looking for a replacement. I was looking at EVGA's 500w, or Corsair's CX500. They're both about the same price (considering rebates), the EVGA is $40 on Amazon, and the Corsair is $35 (with rebate and coupon) on Newegg. I 'm leaning towards the EVGA just because rebates are horrible, and I'm on quite a tight budget. Also, do you think 500w will be enough for my system, and be safe for the future? I'm running an Intel Core i3-4150 (stock clock speed obviously) and an R9 270x.

Thanks for all the help!

Here's the links for the PSUs I'm looking at:

EVGA is probably a bit more reliable

500 will be enough for your system (assuming no watercooling or exotic things)

Nope. Just the stock Intel cooler. I'm thinking the EVGA as well.

NO not the EVGA. For some reason everyone here worships EVGA PSUs for some reason. CX500 is hands down a better built and better performing unit then the non-Bronze EVGA.

What about the bronze version of the EVGA? I found that one for the same price as the non-bronze version.

The CX500 is still slightly better (not really noticeable iru), but the 500B has a 3-year warranty while the CX500 is 2-year.

Ok. I think I'll go for the bronze EVGA. I just found it for $40 on NCIXUS and it has a $10 MIR. So I think that's a pretty good deal for that power supply. It's actually cheaper than the non-bronze xD.

Let us know what you think of it. I have had a number of Corsair PSUs, all of which were DOA and I had to have replaced. A working Corsair power supply is a good power supply, don't get me wrong, but if there is no price difference, EVGA is the superior choice here IMO.

Both the CX500v3 (Bronze) and the EVGA 500B has a three year warranty btw. Both are entry level PSUs that would be fine for your system, but the EVGA is rated for 40C and uses Teapo caps in the secondary (a little better than the ones in the CX). In respect to electrical performance, the CX does offer better DC quality output though.

I would go for the EVGA 500B as well, especially since you can get it for cheaper.

Well it's official. I went for the regular 80+ EVGA 500w on Amazon because the shipping on NCIX was way too expensive, and the rebate would be delivered in something like 10-12 weeks.Plus I didn't see a difference in the Bronze version that was worth the hassle. Again, thanks for all the help!

To many for some reasons in the sentence :)

Either way, they worship them because of the g2, even tho the ones below g2 are not great.

Trying to make my point lol, god knows why people think that every EVGA is good regardless of the model.

People think if one thing from a brand is good, the rest must be good

Due to their complexity and various of testing parameters, power supplies are often a convoluted subject. There's line regulation, load regulation, transient loading, electrical ripples / noise, efficiency, etc. to consider, as well as there are dozen of topologies and hundreds of components to choose from to be used in various of particular designs / platforms. To make matters worse, there are many OEMs that could have design and made the unit as well, and often enough, they are under the branding of another company.

Since the information can be overwhelming, it's not surprising to see people try to condense it in a more easy to understand manner. Of course, this tend to cause people to misconstrued the information that had been provided for them. Hell, it even happens with GPUs and CPUs.

Corsair CX are a tier 3 PSU at best. It will work, but evga b2 is better as well as seasonic and xfx.

Get a tier 1 or 2 PSU..

Here is tier list for psu's
