Hey guys,

so as some of you may know I recently bought a MSI GTX 770 Lightning, which turned out to be not that much of an overclocker. Having that in mind I was wondering if anyone of you has a Lightning Edition graphics card and has tested overclocking both with and without the GPU Reactor? Is there a significant performance difference? There is just not enough information about this on the web.

It has something to do with quicker power delivery and it apparently helps but its still quite confusing to me.

Linus has said that his 7870 hawk overclocks poorly too. It does.. It's the Lotto.

Sell the card, buy another. Bin them yourself if you want real beast overclocks.

It's not that I'm not happy with the overclock (1267Mhz/1950Mhz), I just expected a bit more from this tier of graphics card (Lightingn Edition). I could return it to the store no questions asked, because I bought it just 2 days ago and this is the policy, however what if my next GTX 770 performs even poorly. I have seen people on other forums, who cannot pass the 1250Mhz barrier. Anyways even at 1267Mhz the GTX 770 is more than capable to run games maxed out at 1080p so it's still a huge step from my HD 6970 nevertheless.

From what I have heard the GPU Reactor is just a little bunch of capacitor that filter the power to make it cleaner. I doubt that it will give you much of a boost in overclocking.

In best case scenario with decent OC you will not get anything in "visible" performance bumps (it averages at 3-4 fps more, depends a lot from title to title) in other words OC`ing Graphics doesn`t yield performance bumps like CPU OC.

If you want shocking high performance go SLI......more expensive but performance gain can vary from 25 to (whooping) 40 % !

Practice going sub zero (or at least a whooole lot colder than you are currently). It just helps.

Might be interested in Googling gtx 770 lightning voltage mod too

Thanks for the idea. I found this: http://www.overclock.net/t/1398725/unlock-afterburner-limits-on-all-cards-and-gtx-770-lightning-tweak. i'll give that tool a try. Really hope that it will work. I'll post the results in the GTX 770 Lightning topic. :)

How do you biin a chip? Do you just buy multiple cards, and overclock it to the max and keep only the best overclocker?

I like the color scheme of Noctua fans. Deal with it. Forget about the bad memories of the past.

You don't have to overclock at all if you don't want to. Could pick any frequency you want and only keep what uses the least amount of voltage.

Not everyone can just send the HW they just bought back to the store because it uses a bit too much voltage. So you'll be forced to sell at a loss (sometimes profit if it's a really good piece, just not good enough) in that case in order to risk it on another. ...yup.

The extra you pay for a lightning edition or a classified edition doesn't make any sense on the 770, since they don't actually provide any tangible benefit over the regular versions of the same card (MSI Gaming, EVGA ACX) & yet they cost considerably more.

I'd say return it and get a Gaming Edition 770, otherwise you would have wasted 59$ .

Im just going to pull off random numbers. If you have a 4770K that can OC to 5.2 Ghz on 1.25V, it will be easier to go to 5.5 Ghz than a chip than can only OC to 4.8 Ghz at 1.45?

I haven't even seen a Haswell yet, I don't care for them really. I want to see one of those 800 buck 8350's. Side note over...

Yes, you're correct. Remember your IMC is important too. i7's almost always have better IMCs than i5's. That doesn't mean all i5's are dogs though.

Also.. Temperatures make quite the difference in the amount of voltage you need. So, that fail 4770k that only does 4.8 @ 1.45 should be able to reach a higher frequency at -180c with the same vcore.

The thing is that here in the Netherlands the price difference between a Lightning edition GTX 770 and a regular ASUS DCUII / Gaming edition is 15 euros. It's not like I'm paying a ridiculous amount of money for the highest tier possible, but nevertheless it would be nice to be able to benefit from all that extra stuff, which it offers. Yesterday I was able to get a stable overclock. I achieved a 1320Mhz on the core, however the voltage had to be +100mV and that made the temps max out at 80C.
