Deaktop GPU with laptop?

Go to solution Solved by zig,

Recently found this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bP_8EYQ-2RA . That looks like something you have been looking for. It's not super cheap (~50$), but it may work. Your laptop have ExpressCard slot so that's good...

Hello. I was wondering if it is possible to hook a Desktop Gpu to a Dell E6420 HD+. (I7-2720qm, Quadro 4200, 8gb ram, 240 ssd.)

I was thinking of playing some newish games, and the quadro doesn't cut it.

How would this be achieved, some external pcie adapter, and htpc case and an open dvi/hdmi port? Would I only be able to output to a monitor? What would the tdp of the card need to be?

Thanks so much! :D

the laptop needs to be specifically made to support external GPUs

you cant just attach one to any notebook

thats not how it works

Ah, thats a shame. Seeing I do not have the cash for whatever msi laptop linus reviewed. Is dissapoint.

it CAN be possible, but in most cases it's just not worth the trouble, especially if you have a dedicated card inside the laptop

That is exactly how it works. There's tons of eGPU solutions that work via USB 3 or something. It's only the new dock-type ones from MSI and Alienware that work directly via PCI/e.

It may not be a GOOD solution... but it is in fact a solution. The tech's been around for almost 8 years now, and started with expresscards as the interface.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.
