GTX 960 for GTA V, 2GB or 4GB

Just a quick question of whether it would be worth spending another $50 for the 4GB. Would I see a huge difference when I play GTA V, or would it be better to stick with the 2GB since it's a 960? And if I do get the 4GB, what benefits would I see compared to the 2GB?

You would see benefits from the 4GB model, considering GTA V at 1080p can easily push past 2GB VRAM usage and even into the high 3GBs. It isn't worth the extra $50. However, I would also consider an R9 290 to give it more actual GPU grunt, that is if your PSU can handle it.

Get the R9 280x! Same performance as the 960 with 3gb of vram which is great for GTA. The 4gb 960 is overpriced

I don't really want to go past $240, and my PSU is 460W, which is fine for now, but I'm really deciding between those two 960s, and only nvidia

well gta could easily use 3gb of vram, however the extra $50 could get you a 280x or 290.

Hm, only nvidia does limit you a bit. I'd just get the 2gb tbh then, I'm not sure whether the 960 has enough grunt to push above 2.5/3gb anyway

I would get the 280x but I don't think my PC is compatible (long story), I have a terrible Dell XPS 8300

R9 290! The 290 beats the 960 in almost all benchmarks and you can find a 290 for about $230.

your system providing it has a very good 460w psu can support a 290 all you have to do is install drivers, if your psu is bad quality a 280x will be fine, a 4gb 960 is worthless as it only has a 128bit bus like a 7770 2gb card i had once, was great upto around 1.2gb or vram then the thing ran into memory bandwidth limits and that has color compression,  same as nvidia with nvidias vram being about 16% faster but thats still not enough, that said on 2gb of vram on my r9-270, 1080p high is very playable

Both the 290 and 280x have the tdp of 250W, so one would not be easier on the psu than the other.

 

To OP, the 4gb version will perform slightly better than the 2gb one, if it can and does use more than 2gb. IMO, the price difference is too big for the 4gb to be worth it.

The price difference is so big because the MSI GTX 960 2GB is on sale on Amazon for $190, the EVGA isn't on sale for $210~, and the EVGA 4GB and MSI 4GB are at $240, I said it was a $50 price gap because of that on sale MSI

I wish that were true but ive read in most places the tdp is 300w (i swear i read it was 250w first) still doesnt matter because tdp has nothing to do with power consumption and brain dead people argue the merits of an 88w tdp cpu over a 95w tdp cpu but dont think twice when a titan has a 250w tdp.

AMD tend to be pretty accurate with their tdp, you're probably thinking of the 290X which has a 290W tdp.

the guy wants nvidia let him get nvidia. i say it's a good choice. i would get the 4gb 960. gta v will utilize the extra grunt for msaa, grass quality (a resource hog) and because it runs at 1080 (as well as other things).
