well 2-3 years is pretty long for a gpu but I guess 970/r9 290x is a good card

2-3 years is kinda long, but if your staying at 1080 then i would recommend a 290X (depending on your budget).

JayzTwoCentz predicts the 970 to be a 4-5 year card, at least from launch.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

The 970 and 290x are both slotted in roughly the same price range and will deliver roughly the same performance (overall).  Not sure how DX12 is going to change that.  Either card is recommended, but it's really hard to "future proof" stuff like this.  My guess would be that you're going to be fine going with either one.
