I recently tried to revive my old computer and had some success until I f*cked something up in the BIOS. I was changing startup HDD and stuff I thought I could handle, but after restart the computer never showed up on the monitor.

The motherboard is an Asrock 939SLI32-eSATA2 and my main problem is that I can't access BIOS because the keyboard doesn't register. This has been a problem for many years with the computer, but using a USB to PS-2 port has worked in the past. I even got USB to work one single time today, not sure how. Although now nothing works and my keyboard doesn't even light up.
I've tried manually resetting the BIOS with changing some pins around, but had no luck. I would have tried removing the CMOS battery, but I don't have one.

So... Is there any trick to forcing a restore or access the BIOS? At this point the PC is basically broken as I can't do anything with it..

Remove the CMOS battery for a few seconds and put it back in. Your BIOS will reset.

I think that a PS-2 keyboard without the adapter will work. These are dirt cheap, i found one the other day for like 1 euro here in a local store in greece.

Remove the CMOS battery for a few seconds and put it back in. Your BIOS will reset.

You need to unplug everything for this to work, so make sure your computer is disconnected from the grid.

Once the battery is removed try to turn the pc on a few times so all power is drawn and gone out of the system.

Then plug it back in. Everything will be reset to default. It probably will ask for the time and date when you boot up the system.

The battery does not charge. It does not receive power. Unplugging your PC will do nothing.

I don't have the battery as I said. I just called it MB (motherboard) battery because I forgot what's it was called :P Gonna changed it :)

I thought so to! I'm in the process of finding one atm, but I'd rather do something else before purchasing one.

Doesn't the system keep the bios settings when it's plugged in to the grid? Even when the battery is removed?

I thought it only used the battery when the system doesn't have power.

The battery is used regardless.

does the port broken or your keyboard isn't working to access the bios? I know some keyboard (mostly USB) doesn't register on pre-post to OS

it doesn't matter USB or PS2, if your keyboard is good, then you can access bios with keyboard.

if the port is broken, you can use case USB front panel by hooking the cable to USB port. unless the USB controller chip got fried too.

It's not physically broken at least, but I've used the PS2 port on it before with success and I even managed to use USB today, but only one time.

How do you NOT have a CMOS battery? I can see it in the motherboard pictures -- the metallic circle object.

You can run the system without the CMOS battery, but your BIOS settings are not saved once powered down..

Wut.

I bought the PC used ages ago when I was a kid, so I've got no idea :P The BIOS does seem to save though, because the PC won't flash up on screen anymore. Hm...

so you manage get inside bios but stuck inside the menu? keyboard doesn't work, or it freeze?

Well, as I said in the post I used to be able to use the PS2 and was once able to use USB. Once I'm in the BIOS everything is ok, it's just that my keyboard won't register so I can't actually get into the BIOS.

Oh right, how stupid of me.

The battery functions as back-up power for when the PSU is flipped off or unplugged.

Since you don't the the CMOS battery:

  1. Turn-off the PC
  2. Turn the PSU off with the switch on the back
  3. Press and hold the power button on the case for a few seconds to discharge any remaining power (from the capacitors, etc)
  4. Unplug the PSU's power cord from the wall for about minute or two
  5. Reconnect the power cord and turn the PC on
  6. Your BIOS settings should be reset to the default / "Auto" settings

Thanks for the tip, but it didn't work :( I think maybe the PC is fried.. The last time it worked was when I was installing a windows update, after that it didn't start. The HDD is old, maybe it just died. Also (as dumb as I am) I put in a soundcard while the PC was on, could this have fried the motherboard?

Edit: I turned on the PC and just kept it on, then it just died and won't even start :P The last PSU died, and I think the PC just killed another one :P
