New storage technology can hold data for 1 million years?

QuintusMaximus

A new breakthrough in storage tech shows researchers storing 300 kb of data in a piece of "Fused quartz".

It is said to be able to last 1 million years, and be able to read/write data at 1000 C (1832 F)

300 kb isn't that much, but researchers plan on getting the storage size to 360 TB.

If they can do this relatively soon, Quartz is not very expensive, making them cheaper?

We'll just have to wait and see.

so what are the read/write speeds? thats the main thing that would have me buy a quartz based storage solution over a disk or flash based storage solution in the future.

And then the price of quartz shoots up because of demand...

I don't think the read speeds are an issue, The write maybe. The key her is length, if you wanted documents to last that long you may not want to be using that storage for everyday use. Think of Backup systems, an extra drive that writes your important documents like pictures etc.

what's the point of this?   The human race will destroy itself way before that time....so who really cares!!!
