Will the Pentium permanently damage (bottleneck) a 970?

Here's my build:

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/RTVYzy

If I get the Pentium, will it damage a 970 because of bottlenecking? I'm planning to upgrade my cpu later down the line

Sorry if it's a stupid question, I'm planning on building my first pc soo I'm kinda clueless here :/

It won't break it, it just won't be fast enough for it.

There are no stupid questions. Well... I take that back I always ask dumb questions... Anyway it wont break it, it will just not run at it's full potential until you get a better CPU.

A bottleneck will not cause any damage at all, it will simply just lower the overall performance until the bottleneck is fixed.

You will be fine, bottlenecks don't hurt anything(other than performance). If anything, your GPU will be cooler since it won't have to work as hard.

if you have a pentium and you are looking at a gtx 970 you might want to look into a better cpu first

try for a i5 or something like that

Will be perfectly safe, don't worry.

A bottleneck simply means that one part of the system prevents another from reaching it's full performance potential. It's not dangerous.

Personally I love my g3258. I think its a great starting cpu being overclockable and all. Got mine ruinning at 4.8 rn :D

But If you overclock the cpu you'll lessen the over all bottleneck that it will create. Mine barely bottlenecks my2080x :)

Think of a computer like a group of people that always want to jog at the same pace. If someone can't keep up, the others will slow down their pace to stay together. The 970 would be a pretty fast person, but he would just slow down to match the slower pentium person. If you get a faster CPU, the 970 won't have to "slow down" as much.

So no, bottle necking does not result in deterioration of components. You should be careful with the PSU though, don't take bottlenecking into account when deciding which to buy, always go a little overkill for good measure.

I'm telling the truth! I AM a 12 year old girl!

I think it's better to go with a faster cpu because you'll see similar performance with a slower gpu and faster cpu as a slower cpu and faster gpu but the added benefit of utilizing the faster cpu and tasks other than gaming.

You could consider bottleneck as a speed limiter.

In this case the CPU could act that way, thus throttling down the performance of the GPU.

It's annoying, but it won't damage any components.

So don't worry about it. ;)

But don't skimp on the PSU though.

Buy a good one from a respectable brand, also a bit more wattage wouldn't hurt.

Bottlenecking doesn't damage anything. Turtlenecking does.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

I'd get a better PSU than the Corsair CX, it's a budget and cheaply built unit. Also, I'd much rather have an i3/i5 with something like a 290X/290/280X

i5 4670k - Z87X-UD3H - EVGA GTX 670 Sig 2 - Samsung 840 Evo 250GB - 8GB Avexir Core White 1600Mhz - Corsair 750D w/ RGB LED Mod & Remote Control - 2x SP120 - 3x Enermax Cluster - 2TB Seagate SSHD - Arctic Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 - SuperFlower Leadex Gold 750W

Don't get a 960, get a 280X which is faster, has a proper mem bus and 3GB VRAM

Which EVGA PSU were you thinking of? If it's the 80+ bronze one, it's still not the best but it is better than the CX

If you can push your budget a little higher, and want to keep the 970, replace the pentium in your pricelist by an I3-4160 or a i3-4130. Here's an updated pricelist with my suggestion in it:

Cpu:i5-4690k Gpu:r9 280x with some other things

How far in the future are you getting an i5 or i7? Because a Pentium G3258 and a 970 are not a good combo. I had my G3258 at 4.4 GHz and the framerates were really unsteady in new games, it wasn't a good experience at all with my GTX 970. As soon as I replaced my 4.4 GHz Pentium G3258 with a 3.6 GHz Xeon E3-1231v3 I finally saw the full power out of my 970 and my gaming performance went from frustrating to awesome. If you mean you're buying your 4690k or 4790k in two months or so, then yeah, you can play games at 30 FPS for a while on your Pentium. But if you're thinking of buying the i5 or i7 in six months or a year it would be a waste of money to buy a GTX 970 when you won't get very good performance out of it with the Pentium and by the time you have enough CPU to run it properly there will be better GPUs for the money out there.

Bottlenecking basically means the processor cant feed the GPU enough information for the GPU to work at full load, so no it wont damage the card it will just cause the card to work at less than peak efficiency

CPU-i5 4690k 4.4ghz @ 1.190V, MOBO-MSI z97 gaming 3, Cooler-hyper 212 evo, GPU- r9 290x asus directcuII (-37Mv), Storage-120gb v300(switching soon), 1tb caviar blue, CASE-Red/black h440, PSU-Antec TPC 650.
