Hey guys, recently my friends have been wanting to have our own server. But we can't pay the $50-100 a month for them

So, We are thinking of using my old PC to run the Minecraft/Reign of Kings/Garry's Mod server. Will this PC be able to handle running 24/7 most of the time with around 6 people on it.

Here are the Specs

AMD A4-3400 CPU 2.9GHz

GA-A55M-DS2 Motherboard

400w Powersupply

4gb 1300Hrz RAM DDR3, would probably get another stick of RAM

A couple of Random 120mm fans

A random Case

There is no hard drive in the computer, It is in my new PC. So would a 100gb one do the job? And we have a spare copy of Windows 7 laying around.

Would this PC be good to run a server?

Thanks guys

If you're running a server for vanilla minecraft (for instance), the main factors to consider are internet speed, cpu performance(more important for larger player base/more mods), memory(I'd get more than 4gb, try 8gb with 6gb dedicated to server), and write speeds.

I occasionally run a minecraft server with 20 mods for up to 5 friends on 8mb down 1mb up and it is borderline laggy so nothing less than that. 20 down 5 up is as low as I could recommend for no lag.

As for the cpu, it'll struggle with process intense stuff like spawning in prefabs in gmod sandbox or a lot of block updates in minecraft(tnt etc), but you could try. YMMV.

Go with an FX 8300 (assuming you'll be running all the servers at once) because you'll want a different virtual machine for each server (to prevent one server from affecting other servers if anything happens) so you'll need more cores. You'll also want about 16GB of RAM.

That would require a new mobo and CPU. I think it's better to grab a faster APU for the existing socket. Since it's FM1, the fastest CPU/APU available is the A8-3850/A8-3870K or an Athlon II X4 651.
