So I saw the last live stream and Linus said that Skylake wouldn't support ddr4 (unless I heard wrong, but I'm pretty sure he said this.), but Skylake is supposed to support ddr4 and ddr3 memory but not both at the same time like 1 ddr4 stick and 1 ddr3 stick.  Sooo did linus make a mistake or did I miss some info some where?

I thought that they had this technology called unxlink or something similar to that, that would support ddr3 and ddr4 on boards?

With intel CPUs, the memory controller is on the die. The roadmap presented shows that Skylake's memory controller will have DDR3 and DD4 compatibility, meaning you can use any of them.

Back in the day we had DDR and DDR2 being supported by the same CPU as well. Some motherboards would come with DDR support, others with DDR2, you could pick which you considered most convenient. You could even find 'hybrid' motherboards, that had DDR and DDR2 slots simultaneously. I don't see why this can't happen again.

Ok thanks for clearing that up Forsaken.  So why did Linus say ddr4 wouldn't be supported on skylake O.o ????

I am sure it was a simple error. Of course we will know for sure once the product is released, but I doubt it won't support it. They said that they didn't prepare for the show, and probably it was a slip up.

  • 2 weeks later...

It's not like the Skylake CPU's look that good spec wise, and by that time hopefully AM4, and the new "Zen" Chips release, and those will blow Skylake out of the water.

Everything I've read suggests Skylake will only support DDR4 or DDR3L.  I've seen no mention that it will support regular DDR3.
