Download Mode

Is there a way (or something that already exists) to put windows and my PC into a "download" mode, so that windows is not really "running"?

 

so that the fans (including the cpu one) can go off and the PC can be on over night downloading?

 

The only way I can think to do something like this would be to put some sort of switch on a fan controller to turn the fans off.

and just leave windows running.?

I Know certain download programs do have the option to shutdown when the dl's are complete.

No. You could certainly switch the case fans off manually, but the CPU cooler would need to be running and so would Windows.

Like said, OS needs to be running. You can manually turn case fans off. But for CPU fan I wouldn't recommend turning it off completely. Setting it to run min speed will do same thing and still have some protection against problem situations.

when you download it will go into "idle" state

unless you do something else in background like encoding, or mining.

Its worth noting that a number of years ago you could get boards that did exactly this.

They had a low power chip and part of the motherboard that could run seperately and run a basic torrent downloader or light weight webserver, so you could power down your main computer. 

 

But nope, your computer could go into a low power 'idle' state which it should do anyway. I have a fan controller on my computer where I've setup a very low speed profile - which makes my PC virtually silent. It drops my CPU rad fans and case fans to about 600rpm
