AMD or Nvidia for Ubuntu

DeadSurvivor
Go to solution Solved by ForsakenLive,

Right now, there is still a lot of updating and work to be done by AMD to get the Linux drivers just right.

On it's current state, the performance get less crippled on Nvidia cards. So go with that.

This are comparative benchmarks done by Phoronix.

I'd recommend you get a GTX 960, it has good value and is pretty much rockin' driver-wise in Linux.

Which is better and has less hassle with drivers? I plan to build a cheap PC soon and use Ubuntu for the OS. I just want to know which brand I should go with because I plan to play some games such as DOTA 2, TF 2, CS:GO, and Minecraft. Thanks!

@DeadSurvivor

Pick the card you like best, not which one will work.

Both of them will work just fine with Linux and Windows - both of them are known to work just fine with each OS.

Hope this helps :D

Edit: I do not own a computer with Linux installed but my friend does with an AMD card and his works fine

Dual Boot Windows & Hackintosh

CPU: Intel 4790K | Motherboard: ASUS Maximus Hero Vii | GPU: Zotac AMP! Extreme GTX 970 | Display: ASUS PB278Q | Case: Phantom 630 | PSU: Corsair HX1000i

Canada eh?

I heard that AMD performance is reduced on Ubuntu, that's why I'm confused about this topic. Is it difficult getting drivers in ubuntu for either brand?

I think it is the drivers, maybe I'm not 100% sure. But both should ''work''. The games you listed could be ran on a intel HD 4400 at high def so it's good ether way.

The time you enjoy wasting, is not wasted time.

It is not difficult getting driver in ubuntu for either. Just head to their website if it's not offered on the disk that comes with it.

If you're hesitant about AMD, Nvidia's cards are absolutely great. I absolutely love my 970.

Pick which one offers what you want EG god price/performance.

It shouldn't make much of a difference.
