Is an i5 worth it for mid end cards?

So would even having just BF4 and skype open would ruin in game performance?

not likely but you'll be close to 90% cpu usage (havent tested myself on a haswell quad) one of the joys of amd is while a 4440 is all you need for gaming (i say) my fx8 howvers around 50% usage (all threads half used) which means for streaming gameplay or hell even folding at home on the side you wont lose any performance. thats the point of cpu headroom and i7's however current i7's are badly priced as i7e's arent much more and give allot more power

The CPUs are of the same generation, the speed of the cores is pretty much the same. It could have potentially been an interesting test of how much of a difference real cores vs logical cores made and to what extent hyperthreading is an effective tradeoff (would have been especially interesting if a Pentium were thrown in as well), but the heavy GPU bottleneck meant that actually you couldn't find that much out. You might be tempted to say that logical cores and real cores don't make much of a difference because the i3 kept up mostly with the i5, but that's because the testing methodology resulted in a strong bias against the i5 due to the aforementioned bottleneck.

congratulations you're learning, the "gpu bottleneck" isnt a problem here though, zappian was testing can an i3 keep up with an i5 (in these games atleast yes), im sure if it had been elaborated like linus's video (will edit in) did showing editing or live streaming the results would of been different.

if you wanna see hyperthreadings benefit the test is simple, run cinebench with an i7 and turn it on and off, with an i3 you can turn it on and off.

thatll tell you how much it helps (i bet i can google the difference) and keep them at the same clock speeds.

hyperthreading helps by about 31%

so while a g3258 matches an fx4300 when both overclocked to 4.5ghz add hyperthreading to that pentium (and put it to stock clocks like an i3) but increase the fx4 by 50% (to an fx6) and the fx6 is the better processor.

Wow. It's amazing how someone who understands so little can condescendingly think they're teaching someone something.

 

All you've said is that it doesn't matter that this test reveals nothing because other tests have had better methodologies in the past. Would you like a slow-clap? Because that's completely irrelevant.

 

The fact is, my advice in this thread (which isn't flaming, you have to be pretty fucking thin-skinned to take "this would be even better if..." feedback as flaming) is standard procedure for this kind of test for very good reason.

you can check my youtube channel i've tested this already with my GTX 780...the pentium is a stuttery mess at the settings the GTX 780 can handle fine, the core i3 does limit the performance in many games but of course not in all of them...and in some games even the i5-4460 will limit a GTX 780 (ACU for example).
