There is a huge leap from 1080p to 4K in therms of needed horsepower. So attempting to run 4k games is nowhere near the 1080p GPU we could recommend.

For 1080p, something along the lines of a R9 280X is totally acceptable to run games at high settings, just not the ultra high end titles with all the filters turned on, which most people doesn't use anyway.

If you do hope to run 4K, get the highest end GPU you can find today, and once you go 4k, get another one of those.

What graphics card would you recommend for me, I like playing fps and racing games looking for high 1080p fps and be able to run 4k eventually. I have a 8350 cpu and msi 970 gaming mb thanks.

For playing games at 4K you should have at least two R9 290s or GTX 970s in Crossfire/SLI.

So I would rather go for 1440p. Especially for higher resolutions I would recommend the R9 290X.

The GTX 970 is also an excellent choice, but won't perform as good.

The GTX 980 is an awesome card, but is pretty expensive.

You can also wait for the R9 390X, but no one knows pricing and performance yet. It will hopefully get released in the next couple of weeks.
