i5 vs i7?

Go to solution Solved by FruitBasketSilex,

Well the i7 isn't really in my budget, I was wondering if it was worth the extra € 110. If it was I might scrap some more money together but since it's not really worth it I'll stick to the 4690K

Thank you all for your feedback and advice.

Its not worth it, if your x6 was doing fine, a 4690k will do excellently.

4690/h97 mobo to save a bit of money with no overclock.

4690k/z97 mobo to overclock.

Hello,

I've been checking the internet for this but can't really make up my mind.

I've always used an AMD but I'm switching to an Intel CPU in a few months (End of May or end of June).

The 3 CPU's:  Prices are high, I know :(

- Intel i5 4690K (OC to 4.5GHz) ==> € 274

- Intel i7 4790 ==> € 354

- Intel i7 4790K ==> € 384

I might do some OC on the i5 (about 4.5GHz) and maybe on the i7 but the i7 4790K is already running on 4.4GHz (Turbo) so I'm not sure if that's worth it.

I also need a mobo for the CPU. I don't know if I need an 4 phase power design or an 8 phase for the "small" OC on the i5 or i7 so I could save a few euros on the mobo.

The CPU cooler I'm going for is the Cooler Master Seidon 120v. It's not top notch but it should be good enough.

Now the important thing: I study IT so I need to be able to run 2-3 Virtualbox VM's from time to time (just for testing, not for logging on with a lot of ppl at the same time). My AMD Phenom II x6 1055T is perfectly capable of handling this but dunno about the i5/i7.  I also do some casual Gaming like GTA5, GW2, Warframe, ....

So now the big question: Which CPU will fit my needs (should last 2-4 years at least) and which Power Phase design do I need for the "small" OC?

Do you want to OC? -> i5 4690k + Z97 MoBo + good aftermarket cooler

If you wont OC -> Xeon E3 1231 V3 + H97 MoBo + basic aftermarket cooler

That Xeon is basicaly i7 but without the integrated graphics and cant be OCd.

Why Xeon? Because it cost only as much as i5 4690k while it performs like an i7 4770.

I don't know much about VMs, but if they get a benefit being powered by a multi-threaded CPU then that should be chalked up for the i7 as its hyperthreaded. But otherwise there is little difference between that and the i5.

Will the difference between the i5-4690K @ 4.5 and the i7-4790K @ 4.4GHz be huge or not worth the € 110?

About the Mobo, 4 or 8 Power Phase design?

The Xeons are about the same price as the 4790K so not worth in my eyes (Price in my store ofc)

I don't know much about VM's either, but if your X6 is handling them just fine, a 4690k will do even better.

Doesn't really matter much for Intel as AMD, just get a decent Z97 board.

RIP in pepperonis m8s

Well I was thinking on getting the Gigabyte Z97x Gaming 3. Is that decent enough?

MSI version is better.

Yeah but it's € 25 more expensive. Is it worth it or not?

If the 25€ wouldn't be going towards some other piece of equipment then I would spend it.

Well I'm on a budget so if the difference isn't that big I would prefer going for the Gigabyte mobo.

If you think about it, everyone is on a budget. For instance: I'm on a budget....of 3500$ USD. 25$ wouldn't matter to me. Then again, I went with the MSI Gaming 7. If the 25€ means that much to you, then just go gigabyte, but you should go read reviews between the two to see the differences and whether or not it is worth the 25€ to you.

Point taken, well my budget is about € 450 cause my GF doesn't get it why I can spend that much money on computers so every euro I can save is a more happy GF.

Go with the i7. Overclocking from 4.0-4.4ghz will cause less heat and less power consumption than going from 3.5 to 4.4ghz. If you can afford both without sacrificing any other part of your build, then there's no reason not to get the i7.

CPU: Intel Core i7 4790k @ 4.6ghz, Cooling: NZXT Kraken x61(Push/Pull), MOBO: EVGA Z97 FTW, OS: Windows 10, RAM: 16gb EVGA SuperSC DDR3 2400, Storage: Samsung 850 Evo 250gb + 500gb SSD, WD Black 1tb HDD, PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 1000w G1, Case: NZXT Phantom 530, GPU: 2x EVGA GTX 980 CLASSIFIED, Monitor: Seiki 39 inch, 1080p @ 120hz, 4k @ 30hz
