I don't remember what i was doing the first time( a couple weeks ago) but just now my pc shut down while i was playing a game.  White letters popped up and said "reboot and select proper boot device" or something similar.  so turned it all the way off with the power button and then back on, and it loaded up normally.  Did something overheat? or is it maybe something with my ssd? (because of the "select boot device/drive message) ?  or maybe a psu failure? I don't know

specs are in my signature if you were wondering

it could be you psu, ssd or mobo. open event viewer and see if it says anything there

what should i be looking for?

anything that is an error, it should say "unexpected shutdown" or something like on one of them

it just happened again, and I checked event viewer. There was an event marked as critical and it said, "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."  So it sounds like it could be my psu (or maybe my surge protector..) or maybe just windows?

Use HWMonitor or HWinfo to keep an eye on your PSU line voltages. Look for strange spikes; a couple mV up and down is normal, I mean like +8V on a +12V rail kind of deflection. If you have anything overclocked, return it to stock settings.

Check temperatures too while you're at it, never know. Could run memtest86 a few times and see if anything pops up.

I'll try that, thanks

I gotta say I got a gaming 5 board from gigabyte and had so many issues with it that I was ready to take a hammer to it...luckly I had the patients to return it for a refund.  How long have u had this board?  I would put my money on that. Then again I have some bias towards gigabyte.

I've had it since august.   I've had only a few minor issues with my pc other than it just shutting down 3 times. one of them is sometimes it wont go to sleep unless i restart it.  Like I click start, then sleep, and nothing happens. Then I restart my pc and it will go to sleep. That happens every few days... it's pretty annoying.  do you think that has anything to do with the mobo? I'm pretty sure it's just some application in the background, but I haven't been able to figure out what

Those are some of the same issues I had with that board.  Primarily the computer not responding to the mouse.  Anything to do with the task bar at the bottom always gave me some issues.  I bet getting a more stable board would fix some problems.
