I'm on the same boat as you.  I just grabbed the the collection earlier ($10).  It totals 30GB haha, but I just downloaded the half-life (plain) first.

Like many others, I have a hard time really explaining why it is such an iconic game... it just...is. People nowadays tend to overrated the half-life series and are getting a little over-excited about a HL3 release; but the game is really good. Just don't go in with the expectations of it being the most amazing game of all time, like people tend to perceive it as.

Valve always does a fantastic job with story-telling. I loved Portal and Portal 2 for that reason, the method of story-telling was different. It's more subtle, but the story elements are there.

 

I am still on HL1 though, about 40% in. I plan on playing it and the rest of the series just as soon as I finish Uncharted 3.
