32GB?

I'm building a PC, and I'm wondering how much ram i should get. ATM i'm using a laptop with 8GB, but i'm frequently into swap space (I generally have 200< tabs, + steam, + word processor, plus 5 windows explorers, + VLC open at one time). For my build I'm either going to get 16 or 32GB ram, what do you guys think? I'm a student, but I'm going to get a job soon to help cover costs for PC and overseas trip planned next year, so the extra money spent shouldn't be a major setback.

I would go with 16.

I'd say about 16, or just go with whatever your heart desires.

16GB will be plenty I'm right around 8gb above or below depending with more than that running. Anything more that 16GB your really only need for programs that really soak up the memory. This is all with the page file turned off of course.

You should only need 8gb I'm still fine with 8gb and I have multiple things open and quite a lot of tabs open.

have more than 50 open ATM, and i consider that a light load. I use my PC differently to most people.

16GB. I'm probably going to get excommunicated from the PCMasterrace for suggesting this, but the only time I can see 32 GB being worthwhile (ATM) is in a server, For content creation professionals, People building 3D models, and people running AMD APUs. Apart from that save your money for a better graphics card, or one of those intel 750s.

You need to turn your page file off sir. You'll likely soon find that when multitasking that you run out of those 8GB.

You should only need 8GB, but I've found that to not be enough -- particularly notably when playing Far Cry 3 or Watch Dogs -- so now I'm considering 16GB to be a comfortable amount.

I've never hit anywhere near 8gb even with 50+ tabs and steam multiple windows explorers and MPCBE.

Learn how to manage your tabs... there is no way you can remember whats open in them all nevermind use them.. I generally have 12 - 30 tabs.. Once you go beyond this just close what your not using / bookmark.

 

But by al means, throw tin at the issue instead of improving your usage habits. It is your money after all.

Depends what you all do. For me and how I use my system 8Gb would just and I mean just be enough. Most times im at 8GB or just over. My friend found that most times he didnt have an issues but every now and then hed get close and windows would be quite unhappy, 16GB fix that. If you have 1, maybe two monitors and dont multitask too heavily 8GB is plenty.

but then you run into the having too many bookmarks issue and their hidden to im even less likely to manage those. Also at least in FF tabs dont open until you click them, well besides pinned tabs.

The thing is that I am referring back to (the majority of) them continuously and my internet is... well I live in Australia.
