So, I was in #generictouriststore and I saw a micro SD card for the first time since I became a techie. The data density stunned me. A little micro SD card can hold eight times as much as my USB in one eighth the size(approximately). Why are we all not using these for everything? Why have they not replaced USB drives? What's the catch?

Just a guy who peaked at building back in the days of the GTX 980. If you see me here, assume i have technical knowledge akin to a committed hobbyist builder back then. If something's changed, you'll need to tell me(nicely plz). I'm probably asking for help with the modern build scene since I have no clue what's going on.

You do know that there are 512GB USB sticks, right? And they plug into EVERY computer, not adapter required.

Because USB is universal and on every computer in the world, same cannot be said for sd cards

But then that kinda brings on the argument about adapters. I mean, here in the UK you can get an SD adapter pretty cheap, like £2 or less. Granted if it's an SD card adapter it's fucking huge but micro SD adapters aren't all that much bigger than a normal flash drive.

Why not just make the micro SD interface standard on all computers? Original question not answered. Simply in terms of storage, disregarding compatibility, why are hard drives, ssd's, USB's superior to it?

It's slower than USB 3 and not that much smaller than USB or even SD card. Most laptops have SD card slots. Micro SD is nice, but slower and easy to lose.

HDD: Nothing beats a HDD in terms of cost per GB.

SSDs: Much faster, a cheap 256GB SD card is almost as much as a cheap SSD with 128GB Micro SD cards costing as much as a 256GB SD card.

USB: Cost per GB (cheaper).
