After a lot of time and choices, I've decided this will most likely be my first PC build http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/CFWppgwhat do you think all it? Is there anything that I could get cheaper but still live up to that performance etc? The cooler is my final concern. I plan on overclocking

Can i ask why you're looking at the D14 and no SSD?

Consider filling that top fan slot with a 200mm fan :)  Otherwise it's a good build.

For the Best builds and Price lists here is a world where many points of the price have been predefined already for your convenience!

The Xeon E3 1231 V3 IS BETTER Than the Core i5 4690K and a Significantly better value for the non-overclockers or value shoppers.

The OS is like a kind food, Try it before saying if you like it or don't.

Looks like a nice build.

Instead of only using one ram stick, I would use two 4GB sticks. It simply looks better and you'll probably get a bit more performance out of it.

You could safe a bit more money by using this XFX PSU: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/xfx-power-supply-p1550sxxb9It has good ratings.

The Noctua is a good cooler and lives up to many water cooling solutions while remaining an air cooled solution. My only worry is with RAM clearance since it is such a large cooler. I'd just look a little more into that as I know that has been an issue for many in the past with this cooler.

The case will fit the Noctua by about a centimeter or so if you can get it.

Once you get it built I do agree that an SSD for at least the OS is a worthy upgrade. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Few things.. I'd go hyper 212, drop to an i3 and grab minimum of a 240-480GB SSD and 2x4GB Ram and bump the PSU a lil...

I'd try pick up a decent 750W gold rated unit.. Leaves the door open to SLI in the future if you ever decide to go that route and will make it run cooler and quieter in the mean time.

You want 2 sticks for Dual channel RAM.

OCZ Vertex 180 is a stunning drive and cheap (as is the Intel 730 these days, especially if you can find a promo on them on top of the current reduction.

Reasoning behind the i3:

http://www.techspot.com/review/972-intel-core-i3-vs-i5-vs-i7/page5.html

Hyper 212 or similar (I believe there is another cooler thats about the same price that performs a bit better these days) as It'll give you good temps and quiet running for less cost.

Yes your limited by lack of overclock on the i3.. But really the difference in game is very much more affected by GPU than CPU.. i3 is within 5-7% difference on games where there is any difference and that could be down to clock speeds.

I'd keep the z97 board so that later down the road you can drop in a second-hand i7 for a cheap upgrade.

I don'T PreSS caPs.. I juST Hit THe keYboARd so HarD iT CriTs :P

So thanks for the replies, however despite being not experienced etc with this stuff I don't agree with everything you guys say. I will get an i5 not and i3 :P I really don't see that as a great choice especially considering I'm buying a gtx 970 Soo yeah. I'm not going to get windows 7 either, windows 8 is better. Most importantly I do plan on overclocking so can someone clarify the best suited cooler. I was recommended the d14 or whatever it is but you seem to say otherwise, can you say which is best for my build and why taking into account overclocking.

Many thanks

personally i would go with windows 7 off of ebay (got mine for $45) instead of windows 8, if you wanna save a few bucks.

Hi thanks yeah still not sure which cooler you said is best for my build? Since I'm apparently running out of room in my case. Which SSD shall I get??

Many thanks

Get a decent liquid cooler and an ssd. A build that price should definitely include an ssd

Thanks so h100 instead of d14? I'm also wondering how noisy my PC is going to bed? :/ is liquid cooling really necessary ive included an SSD now btw :)

Thanks guys

I personally would go the h100 since the d14 is so bulky and limits your ram choices. It will give you the best overclocking headroom and you can always replace the fans for quiter fans or change the fan curve

If you can stretch your budget then get at least a 120GB SSD as well. A Crucial BX100 is a good budget one.

Take it you didn't even look at the link?

Tests done with a 980.. maximum of a 7% difference between an i3 and i5. IMO when your looking at a 3-5 frame difference in some games only, it's worth the savings on CPU to grab some other decent components. i3 has 4 threads, i5 has 4 threads..

But hey, it's only advice, take or leave as you will.

I think the D14 and the H100i are about even when it comes to cooling but the D14 is quieter because it uses PWM fans. Also, just look for some dual channel RAM that doesn't have big heatsinks and you'll be fine. SSD is also a must to make your computer feel fast. Most SSDs are about the same in performance but Crucial and Samsung are about at the top.

G3258 @ 4.5 | 8GB Team Vulcan RAM | 128GB Kingston V300 SSD (I didn't know what I was doing when I bought it) | MSI H81I Motherboard | Corsair H55 with Noctua NF-P12 | EVGA SSC GTX 960 4GB | OCZ 550W Fully Modular PSU with Noctua NF-A14 | Cooler Master Elite 130 (Soon to be something cool)
