HI LTT Forum,

I was taking a glance at Intel's Xeon processors and was wondering exactly why there are just so many options in Xeon processors? There's something like over 40 of the E5 series.

What are the differences between some of them, and what are they all used for? Are there some for power orientation, and are others targeted for low power and low thermal output?

The reason I ask is because in passing someone was wondering if I could put together an SFF quiet workstation PC, and was wondering where to start with the CPU, maybe a Xeon with low power and low thermal output?

Hope you guys can help me out with this!

they all have their differences which you can see by going to their ark.intel specification page

they are used in all kinds of servers so companies need a CPU to fit their exact needs

if youre building a workstation I suggest you buy the cheapest xeon that has the # of cores/threads you want, then spend the rest of the money on a silent and efficient cooling solution

a low power xeon will just give lower performance

the reason there are low power CPUs is because when you have thousands of xeons in a server you need to have exact TDP that matches your thermal solution

if you buy a good quality CPU cooler you will have more cooling than processor TDP so you dont need to worry about temps
