Can't access drive... CRAP.

Long story short: I have a hard drive that I used with some NAS software, and I can not access the folder on the drive that I need to. I get an error message that says "Failed to open directory "ad1_shared". Permission denied."

 

ad1_shared is the folder I need to access... OS is Xubuntu 12.04LTS.

Run this command in ssh as root, chmod 777 pathtodirectoryhere

do "sudo nautilus" in a terminal.

 

it will then ask for a password. type it in, and press enter, it will open a file browser windows, and try opening the folder from that window.

I use Thunar, so I hat to replace nautilus with thunar.

 

So, how do I copy things to my desktop and mount a network drive (done with an SMB share)?

Check the owner of the folder, if it is not your user account use this command

 

sudo chown username filepath

So how would I do this and take control of all files (not just the folder)? Username is travis and the folder is ad1_shared on the drive ad1shared.

 

EDIT: Nevermind. I opened Thunar as root and I was finally able to change the permissions.

Great that you got the permissions fixed, to change the owner of the the drive itself you would have had to find the mount point of that drive and used "chown username mountpoint"

Thankfully I just had to get access to that folder so I can transfer everything to my NAS. I was starting to freak since I thought I just lost a ton of data.
