HELP SSD space missing

Go to solution Solved by Tikhon,

Got it.

It was a massive system restore point for some reason my system restore was permitted to use 50% of my drive.

If anyone else has that problem go to control panel > system and security > system

(pressing [win] + [Pause] takes you there straight away)

Then select the boot drive and go to 'configure' there you can delete the restore points and select the amount of space you think you can allocate to this. (I recon it wouldn't be the end of the world to turn it off altogether but I left it with 10% of the drive)

The folder where the files were originally C:\System Volume Information. was a restricted system folder.

Great thanks to teh community for your help.

Tikhon

I was just cleaning off some old programs off my SSD boot drive and loads of space suddenly went missing! The free space counter went from well over  60 Gb to under 20 GB. I literally saw the bar fill up in front of my eyes, this happened while I was defragmenting my mechanical storage drive.

I used Space Sniffer and it found 57.3 Gb of “Unaccessible space”, WinDirStatshows similar results. Both programs estimate my used capacity at around 165 Gb which I think is the correct amount.  But windows says I’m using 238 Gb.

As I said this is a very recent problem the disk filled up right before my eyes. I did make the mistake of defragmenting the SSD …

Please help,

Thanks

PS

Tried rebooting,

Checking for errors on reboot,

I know my hibernate file is huge,

Tried CCleaner

Uhhh... You shouldn't be using hibernate on a SSD, and have you tried running any virus scanners such as AVG or MalwareBytes?

Thanks for replying.

I'm using Malware Bytes and Avast.

Hibernation is something I'll take care of but it's not the root of teh problem.

Have you checked your temporary files? They can add up and fill up your HDD fairly quickly.

I think CCleaner deleates temp files.

UPDATE: I ran SS as administrator and found a behemoth 48 gig system file called:

{c9ab1272-da4e-11e4-bd34-448a5b9ed4b8}{3808876b-c176-4e48-b7ae-04046e6cc752}

And some similar files of about 10 gig in total

under C:\System Volume Information.

Under properties it says its created today...

@ Jannou1 - thanks mate, I have it.

Couldn't figure out what the problem is though..

If CCleaner deletes it then it's probably OK, just saying.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

If the file type is system log or something, don't hesitate to delete it. I've deleted similarly named files on my ssd and it's fine.

I am conducting some polls regarding your opinion of large technology companies. I would appreciate your response.

Microsoft Apple Valve Google Facebook Oculus HTC AMD Intel Nvidia

I'm using this data to judge this site's biases so people can post in a more objective way.
