ISP is killing me...

So I'm up at a friends house on Whidbey Island and they're ISP is killing me, let me explain why. It is satellite internet with a 15gb monthly cap, 8mb connection but the ping is horrible. But from midnight to 5am its free, so thats when I can actually watch youtube and download games if need be (almost 3mb/s at peak). Web pages take a while to load during the day and playing online is not a good experience (we were trying to play PS2)  Plus I'm pretty sure the cap has already been reached. Not to mention its 90 dollars a month!! My 3mb connection at home surpasses this.But they're is hope because fiber is now available, a 50mb connection for $70 a month that isn't satellite! Anyone else have really bad net?

Same with New Zealand, the only good thing about my ISP is that it's 99 bucks for unlimited (once you hit 1TB they send you an email, lol) and free national calling. We get about 11-17mbp/s down, and 0.85mbp/s up, it's annoying. The infrastructure down under is horrid.

Never downloaded over 1mb/s even on steam. uploads are few hundred kb/s. about 15mins from Sydney CBD. Something like $69 per month but its unlimited ADSL2+ so I just leave my PC on 24/7 downloading when I'm not home

in japan you can get 2 gb/s internet just for comparaison sake...

What's wrong with that speed?  The Australian average is apparently 4Mb/s at the moment. Mine is 16Mb/s with an 11ms ping.

Heres a picture of my internet speed, Its constant we run a 100gb data cap, only paying $100 including home phone, and a home phone bestmate. ;p

 

During downloads on steam, i peak around 2.1mb-ish, sometimes peak to 10mb for like 3seconds xD, but a constant 1.6-1.9mb download.

I can't handle having a low cap man, I'd go through that 100 gigs in a few days, and I live in a flat with other students so yeah .. ha

Streaming full HD movies, TV shows, gaming, etc etc, it all stacks up, we hit about 700-900 a month depending on what we're doing. Full HD youtube also kills bandwidth significantly

In a household of 8 other users, it's tough, not impossible but once the NBN is up and fibre is available we're hopefully jumping on it asap

 

Luckily if no one else is downloading at home then online gaming doesn't lag

With 8 people you'll be able to split the bill a get the 100Mb/s connection plan with a decent data limit too. :)

Well 8 family members, so even splitting the bill is a bit much since a few of us wouldn't be able to afford it.

Really hoping the NBN will become affordable/available but it looks like the government is doing a bang up job on getting it rolled out.

There will be progress you can rest on that, even if Liberal win the next election the NBN will still be rolled out, just not as fast so you'll, in all likelyhood, get at least a 25Mb/s connection in the same time frame.

Yeh just been reading through the NBN thread on here as well. Still hope the liberals don't implement their half-ass'd plan and continue with the NBN.

 

From the results that some users in Oz get from fibre now, it's really exciting but at the same time disappointing cause it probably won't be in our area for another few years and by that time I'll hopefully have moved out and looking for a place that has a solid connection already. My parents are both big net users as well so hopefully they'll take advantage of the available bandwidth.

Japan is small and the government can easily roll out high speed internet so its a bit different to the rest of the world
