Shopping for GPU

Go to solution Solved by incarnate,

honestly my recommendation is this, get an r9 270 (a huge improvement over what you have) and take the money you save and save up for an i5 cpu mobo and ram. after that you'll be good to go and can save up for the 1070 or whatever else will be out next.

Hello guys,
I´ve built a budget PC about 6 months ago and I´m planing to get a new GPU but I need some help because I don´t really have much experience with this stuff...
Currently I have a Sapphire 7750 1gb GDDR5 graphics card, an AMD athlon x4 740 quad core 3.20 ghz CPU, ASRock FM2A75 Pro4-M motherboard, 8gb ddr3 ram (1600 mhz), and I think I have 500 or 550 watt PSU (I just forgot)...
And now I´m thinking to buy either r9 280x or gtx 970... wich one should I get? Will my CPU be a huge bottleneck? And, is 500 watt PSU enough to power up r9 280x (will I have room for overclocking it)
Please reply. cheers!

your cpu would be a huge bottleneck in cpu bound games (starcraft, WoW, skyrim to name a few) in other games it would still bottleneck the 970 and most likely the 280x as well. however you could bank on direct x 12 alleviating bottlenecks and go for broke. or you could wait until more than just rumours about it are known.

currently the fastest gpu your cpu wouldn't bottleneck too much in most games would probably be a 270/270X. a gtx 760 would be bottlenecked but not by a huge amount

My rig:
CPU: i5 4690k 24/7 @4.4ghz (1.165v) Max 4.7ghz (1.325v) COOLER: NZXT Kraken X61 MOBO: Asus Z97-A   RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical   GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SSC   PSU: EVGA GS 650W   CASE: NZXT Phantom 530 HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB + WD Black 2TB

you will only need a 500 watt power supply.

both cards will max 1080p, but hte 970 is more suited to compare against the R9 290X.

anything above a R9 270X will get bottlenecked.

I would probably invest in a cpu upgrade first.

Yes I understand that my cpu isn´t really the most powerfull cpu out there and that it would bottleneck my new gpu. but how much do you think it would actually bottleneck?

Because it is a quad core cpu, I won´t be doing any professional work such as rendering or stuff, I´m only going to play games at 1080p. I´m planing to play all latest and upcoming triple A titles such as: Metro last light, Dying light, gta 5, cod advanced warfare, nfs rivals, battlefield hardline, far cry 4, witcher 3 and those kind of games... so how much would my cpu hold back gtx 970 or 280x, how much performance would I get?

you wouldn't get any more performance than if you went with a 760 or an r9 270x. your cpu would be a huge bottleneck. i'm sorry to have to say this but the amd athlon is a very weak cpu. it is a quad core, it is fine for midrange systems but it won't be able to drive a high end graphics card unless direct x 12 (which would require windows 10) would reduce the cpu's workload to drive the graphics card.

to answer your question i'll have to put out some estimates based on my experiences with an amd A10-7850k (a bit better amd quad core than yours)  and an r9 270

with a gtx 970 you'd be looking at, on average about 40-50% gpu usage.

with an r9 280x you'd be looking at about 60-70% usage on average

with a gtx 760 you'd be looking at about 75-80% usage in most games

and with an r9 270X you'd be looking at 95-100% usage in most games, and as low as 70% or so in cpu intensive games

what this means is that you'd see no difference in performance with a gtx 970 over a gtx 760.

there is nothing stopping you from getting a 280x or 970 and upgrading your cpu later.

again, i don't like being the bearer of bad news but unfortunately this is just the reality of it.

are you really sure about all this? becouse some other people i have asked said that my cpu would be a bottleneck bot not that huge.

like i said i was doing some estimating. and ya the numbers to look a bit off. it would be a significant bottleneck however. my experience with the A10 7850k and r9 270 showed some significant bottlenecks in cpu bound games (like total war games, final fantasy xiv, and others) and no bottleneck on other games. hence why i was averaging the gpu usage. at best on the 970 you'd be getting about 60% gpu usage or so. the bottleneck on a 970 would be huge, to the point where a gtx 760 would perform the same.

upgrading the GPU doesn't make much sense with that GPU. You'll pay a lot of money on a good GPU, but the performance improvement will be really small with that CPU bottlenecking.

It really doesn't matter that it has a quad core. There are dual cores that would outperform it by quite a distance. I would honestly get a slightly better CPU before I would update your graphics card.

There is absolutely NO sense in getting something like the 970...It would be completely insane.

Find out what money you have, upgrade your CPU to something a bit better, and go after a cheaper GPU than the 970.
