PCIe PCI equivalent?

Go to solution Solved by GlassBomb,

Right... but PCIe x16 graphics cards are usually 2 expansion slots thick, right? But, are they upside down?

This is pretty much how it will be like. But with the network card instead of the sound card. Also note the space between the graphics cards.

So, I'm looking at this motherboard, the MSI Z97 PC MATE, and I want to put a PCIe x1 network adapter in one of the PCIe x1 slots. However, the PCIe x1 slots are directly above the PCIe x16 slots, which means they would be blocked by the two graphics cards I may install. However, there are 2 regular PCI slots below, and I was wondering if you could use PCIe x1 adapter in a PCI slot. Anyone know?

Mind if I ask why you need an additional network adapter?

And the network adapter should be able to fit in the top slot without any kind of issue.

Edit: The graphics card will take up slot 2-3 and 5-6. Leaving 1 and 4 free to use. Even if you have graphics cards installed. As long as the network adapter only takes up a single slot.

Aw. Any solution for the PCIe slot being covered up? That's just plain bad design.

You can use a PCIe extender.

even if it's not, usually that slot use same IRQ channel

happens to me once, if I fill both PCI-e slot, the pci-e x1 would not work in system

I have to get USB adapter and actually make decision never buy internal adapter again (except for Storage adapter)

The PCIe 1x slots on that board are above the PCIe 16x slots. If the network card is a single slot design I do not see a problem on using it in either pf the PCIe 1x slots.

The top PCI x1 shouldn't be blocked unless you have a weird case

The hang down, so to speak.

With that motherboard a graphics card will take up slot 2 and 3, leaving the first slot empty.
