So since i am indecisive i think i will leave this question here and let you guys help me out with this

currently i have a ESXI server running a few virtual machines that host my web server, AP controller, a couple of windows machines, and what ever OS usually Linux distro that i happen to be tinkering with that day. but i am running into a MAJOR problem the Intel raid card is that contains my 5 3tb drives is SLOW and limits the server alot. with that being said i am looking to build a Free nas box and hopefully this will increase the wright speed on my storage to anything above the 3 Mbps i am getting now i already have some of the things i need for this build. my plan is to use iscsi over Ethernet to store the virtual machines on the free nas box!

Things I have

5 x 3tb seagate drives (please no HDD fire wars PLEASE)

Case

6 hot swap bays

Things i need

16gb of memory (ecc or not someone justify if i need it for this build)

processor preferably Intel

mother board at least 6 sata 3 ports and 2 Gbit nics

psu recommendations have had luck with the hx750 from corsair ( Yes I know this is over kill! )

I have $400.00 to $500.00 usd to spend on these components

Thank you in advance and I hope some has a good configuration in mind, because I don't!

If you want to go with Freenas, definitely go for ECC RAM. When I built mine, it was heavily recommended that I should use it. Keep in mind that when you choose to go ECC, you also have to have a motherboard that supports it.

You don't have to go Xeon if you have ECC, I took a low performance CPU that supports it. Take a look on the Intel site (if you want Intel) which CPU's support it.

i3's support ECC too.

*facepalm* Thank you i did not know that and did not look either. and i prefer Intel but im willing to look at AMD!  just stating my preference in CPU if you can call it that and no i have no reason for it other then i like the color blue and yes i know that is a awful reason. plus they have never given me any problems but neither has amd so it a draw!

I don't know which kinds of performances you are looking for, but I use mine as a file + a little bit of media server and it is serving (;)) me well. Although the CPU is a bit to slow for HD streaming:

CPU: Intel Pentium 2020

Motherboard: Supermicro X9SCM-F

RAM: 2x Crucial CT102472BD160B

Storage: 3x WD Red 3TB

Case: Fractal Design Difine Mini

Bootdrive: Sandisk Cruzer Blade

PSU: Seasonic G-Serie 360Watt

Just maybe as a reference :)
