I bough my MSI GTX980 Stock Cooler on this christmas.

This is my first high-end GPU and i just want to be sure its working properly

How can i see that?

You could download the free version of 3D Mark and run the FireStrike benchmark. It'll show you some numbers on how your GPU performs compared to other results.

Also while you're running that, you could have a look at your temperatures with GPU-Z and make sure it stays cold.

3DMark, Unigine Heaven/Valley are the most common tests.

You could plug it in and see if you pc starts or if the fan starts spinning in the GPU

Install MSI Afterburner and run various common benchmarking tests like many have mentioned.  Monitor your temperatures using something like HW Monitor which does gives readings for your video card.  Write down the results or save the results you get for various test and then compare them versus others people reveal on the net on various sites including this one.
