Best budget CPU for upgrading

Go to solution Solved by dmanschramm,

FX-6300 is one of the best AMD processors for the budget. It'll work great with a 960, and an r9 280.

Happy upgrading!

So I have been trying to find the best CPU that I can upgrade in the future as I please. I would really like a CPU that could start with a 750ti, and go up to say, a r9 280 or 960. I would prefer any AMD cpus just due to the fact they are less expensive, without too much of a performance difference. I have been looking at the fx 6300, but if there are any suggestions that would give me a bigger variety of upgrades, or better performance for less or slightly more money it would be VERY helpful.

Pentium G3258 with a Z97 and a aftermarket cooler is a great stepping stone until you can afford an i5.

Im not really interested in upgrading my cpu, I would rather have one I can put in my board and hopefully never replace because I'm just that lazy

Then your post is misleading. You literally talked about upgrading CPU whenever you want..

If you want a cheap budget gaming CPU then get an i3

FX-6300 probably won't bottleneck a GTX 960 but if you go to a 970 or 980 bottlenecking will start. Go with an intel 1150 CPU if you're thinking of going that high. If not, then stick with the FX-6300.

By the time you will need to upgrade in about 5 years, its not relevant to upgrade to a 980 or even an i7-4790k.

He's saying he wants a CPU he can throw in and not replace for a long time, not a board that will permit throwing in multiple CPUs

With the prices right now, one of these kits...i would go with the i5 if you can afford it...better for long term you can go as high as a GTX 980 on this if you'd like, the core i3 is suited up to a GTX 960 or R9 280/285:
