Hi everyone, new to this forum so.. well hello!

So, essentially I've looked at revision over revision of getting together my first proper build and I've gone through just about every option on what should I get.. this is super common and I know it's mainly personal preference, so I have my (I say final) list so I've tried to do my homework and would love some contribution from anyone who has opted for similar set-ups, thanks!

Also I should say I'd love to game properly with this rig (the 4K elements are for video editing) hence the massive leaning towards gaming components (lack of cash has meant laptop gaming has been the pinnacle of my experience, and err.. low settings just aren't pleasant; the jump from low to enthusiast is me saving for-bloody-ever and having a burning desire to build one of these beauties)

So here it is:

PSU: Corsair RM1000

Mobo: MPower Max Z97

CPU: i7 4970K

RAM: Corsair Vengeance 32Gb (plasti-dipped yellow)

GPU: 2 x r9 290X 4G lightning xfire

HDD: WD Green 3TB

SSD: Crucial 256 (maybe 512)

Cooling: Corsair Hydro 100

Screen: ASUS PB287Q 4K

Any major no-no's there? (not yet decided on the case, but it's probably going to be a Corsair Graphite 760T with the white bits plasti-dipped into a 'hazard tape' style)

Being in the UK I have a bit of a disadvantage when it comes to cost so yes, the rumours of the 390 / 390X are tempting, but I will probably stick to the 290X, unless they really are going to be pushed when trying to run star citizen at 4k?

Thanks so much in advance, will be good to hear what you think of this plan!

Adam

Impossible? Yeah, like that's a word...

Yep, immediate no is the PSU. Get something from EVGA or Seasonic.

Everything else looks fine.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

Looks pree good, but not sure about dual-290x's and the MPower mobo though.

290x has a lot of heat output, even with good aftermarket coolers, and I'm just not sure about the MPower, preferably get a Z97-A from Asus

NOTE: The 290x's are still good, I'm not bagging on them

EDIT: That PSU is way overkill too

What's wrong with a RM1000?

It uses cheap secondary capacitors - I would expect more from a PSU that expensive.

Interesting on the PSU, wasn't expecting that but the capacitor shortcomings makes sense.

What's your budget?

That rig totals £2400 - the UK prices for components is.. err.. well.. not good. I have £1500 so far, but my aim is essentially 'save as much as it takes'

I've looked at the mobo - that's literally been the hardest decision of it all. I'm looking for a good overclock base and have heard the MPower series (I might stretch to XPower) is fairly solid in stability and works well with the 4970K. What are your concerns? (also black and yellow is a tricky colour scheme)

EDIT - so what would an OC CPU + OC Xfire 290X getup pull?

Impossible? Yeah, like that's a word...

I don't know, I've just never really seen any reviews on it and I just generally haven't heard of it. Also, I generally prefer Asus/Gigabyte mobos. However, if you've found solid reviews on it and think it's right to you, go with it.

I would be safe and put 1000W towards that thing by then.

Ah I see, no that makes sense, it's rather no-frills apart from the marginally-improved onboard sound, it's mostly the across-the-board 4.5 star reviews and it's nice pairing with the 4970K that tipped the balance, unless from your experience there is an absolute obvious choice of Mobo for the 'just under £200' bracket?

Impossible? Yeah, like that's a word...
