well oculus rift would be perfect, looking into a distance.

looking at one spot, one distance is bad for eyes, allways same focus. good distance is 5 meters, like they recommend for tv.

breaks are good, or look out of window see the mountains

I dont know too much about this, but i think its more to do with the quality of the screen.

Oculus and the like are a few centimeters from your eyes, but they use OLED.

For LCD (which is almost everything else)... its probably a lot more. However, stuff like flicker, contrast shifts are all bad for your eyes. So spend the extra 5$ for a flicker free IPS.

Rule of thumb, ~2 x the diagonal size of the display.

So 24" , distance from eyes 48".

Though imo I would say closer to 1.5x is fine.

Resolution effects this ofc, higher the res the closer u can sit.

Brightness and such in regards ot eye strain isn't really a factor as u can simply tune that to ur needs by changing the monitor settings and/or changing ambient light levels.
