my house was built in the 60s and there was no internet in the 60s  :o shocker I know.

so there is no wired internet connection how would i go about doing this but still keeping the wireless internet for phones and ipads.

Would i have to take the connection from my modem to a gigabit switch and one of the ports to my router and run a bunch of cables from the switch through out the walls (im a pretty handy man) and make ports in each room?

should i use cat 7 or cat 6?

I think that is how you do it

Use cat 5e (CAT 7 does not make any sense for anything but for use in small businesses). Also, get the gigabit from the router, not directly from the modem. Some routers are picky about things like that.

In addition, plugging in a switch to your router will not alter the wireless network settings

cat 5e is more than you need :)

cat 7 is 10 GBit although people have done 100 Gbit over cat 7 :o
cat 6A is meant for 10 Gbit i think

cat 5e is 1 Gbit (that is the speed of google fiber)

cat 5 is 100 Mbit (that is the speed of a normal internet connection)

Correct me if i am wrong, but cat 5e is the best choice

All correct, but cat 5 is obsolete and cannot be found anywhere really.

OKAY so. Dont touch cat 7, i use 6a with a Cisco SG200-26P as my gigabit switch, the 6A leave room for you to go 10Gbe in 10 years or something.

I only paid 20$ more for 6A over 5E so it may be a different situation, 5e can handle gigabit, 6a handles 10 gigabit but 10gb networking parts are very expensive right now.

Do not buy shileded cable. Run ethernet as far away from 110V wires as you can and try to cross them at 90 degrees.

My house was also build in the 60s and running CAT is an absolute nightmare but its possible.

Pue the switch in a centeral place that has acess to run wires throughout your house even if your router is elsewhere, this will keep it easy if you have alot of cables, keep in mind good business grade switches are noisy. (My SG200 is proof of this...)

If you run this have u ever thought of a home security system? you can get a POE switch and run the cat cables to IP cameras. Just a thought.

Have fun networking

Plugging in a switch wont effect your router, please get a managed one it saves headaches (for me at least)

Put your modem in bridge mode to ur router then plug the switch in your ROUTER. This is the BEST way to set up a network.

Small business? I doubt even 10% of small businesses have 10Gbe switches... lol
