How hard is it to flash a custom ROM onto an android phone and is it safe?

asim1999

I have an Xperia SP and was wondering how to do this as my phone's software support ended 2 months EARLY due to sony not being bothered to release KitKat for it!!!. And so would like to ask, how easy is it to flash a custom ROM onto the phone and is it worth it and is it safe?

Also, is an SD card required as the one in my phone is corrupted and i need to remove it?

It isn't hard and there are plenty of tutorials online. That said, it does carry a small risk of bricking your phone.

I've built 3 PC's, but none for myself... In fact, I'm using an iMac that my dad bought for me as my desktop. Awkward...

Please don't say "SSD drive." By doing so, you are literally saying "Solid State Drive Drive" and causing my brain cells to commit suicide. The same applies to HDD (Hard Disk Drive) and PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express).

do you need an external SD card to do it?

Some methods do, others use a computer via USB.

flashed a custom rom on my g3. no issues whatsoever. just need to be careful and patient. i advise you also backup the stock rom with the recovery you'll be installing

it'll be helpful and a tad easier, but it isn't required. check around xda for some tutorials.

Is it worth it? sometimes especially if there is no more manufacturer support for it like in your case

is it safe? absolutely not (there is always have a small chance you brick the phone as pointed out by @Boink)

can it be done? yes you can start here --> http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Huashan_Info(also look up youtube videos and search the xda forums for more info as recomended by @techguru )

understand there are nightly and stable version. Nightly will be the latest and stable exactly what it says.

will everything work? most likely not since the support is from community how ever it will be very usable.

What you going to need?

1. SD card will make it easier (but not necessary). How ever since this is your first time I recommend you to get an external SD as pointed out by @Technicolors

2. Good quality cable

3. Fully charged phone

4. All drivers and software downloaded and working on you PC

5. Patience and common sense

6. A spare phone if you brick this one :P
