Hey All,

I am an entrepreneur from Ottawa, Ontario, and I am creating a true console killer. However I am running into some questions that I can't seem to figure out.... so I thought I would come ask the experts.

- I was thinking of doing a linux based OS but don't know how to go about creating one or hiring the right type of person to design one(Would be a cross between netflix and ps4 interfaces). What would you all recommend?

- Is linux the way to go? If not what would you recommend?

- What kind of price range would you pay for a console that can play games in higher fps and higher graphics options?

- Finally what would you all like to see in a true console killer?

Thanks Everyone :)

1) You dont build your own linux OS, you use one thats already been made.

2) steam OS would be cool to have, but windows would be much better than linux if youre trying to game on that thing

3) I wouldn't because I already have a PC, but console players would probably only buy it if it costed less than $500

4) something that looks cool and can be customised with new parts

NEW PC build: Blank Heaven   minimalist white and black PC     Old S340 build log "White Heaven"        The "LIGHTCANON" flashlight build log        Project AntiRoll (prototype)        Custom speaker project

Spoiler

Ryzen 3950X | AMD Vega Frontier Edition | ASUS X570 Pro WS | Corsair Vengeance LPX 64GB | NZXT H500 | Seasonic Prime Fanless TX-700 | Custom loop | Coolermaster SK630 White | Logitech MX Master 2S | Samsung 980 Pro 1TB + 970 Pro 512GB | Samsung 58" 4k TV | Scarlett 2i4 | 2x AT2020

Linux imo is not a viable option for games atm since basically no AAA titles run on it and that's what people want, windows is really the only option. Honestly feel as if this is a very hard market to get into as you already have 3 major players which afaik all take a loss on the actual hardware. (assuming you already knew this last point though since your considering such a project)

You would have to create  a Linux Os Distro. If you want to create a OS from scratch you would need to make a based Os of the Mike OS and you would need to have years of knowledge of coding in the language Assembly. When creating a Os you have to remember you can't use direct x as many games may not be supported for the Linux.

Making a OS from a blank sheet of code would take years of programming. I gave you two choices, I suggest the Distro as it's easier.

I can get all the hardware from suppliers with better specs then the PS4 and make it cheaper then the Xbox one, kinda why I am considering it.

As a life long gamer I want to bring a gaming platform that is not limited to one companies property. I want  to bring all of them to one easy to use source.

Well hardware wise its been in development for quite sometime sourcing all the right suppliers and getting the prices where it is viable for the gamer.

However software wise its been a challenge, I see the gaming industry shifting from the standard buy the game and download.

That is why I don't want to use just Steam OS I want to use Origins, Steam, Ubisoft, and Android all in one.

Which is possible I just need to get a custom OS made off of linux or Windows.

Maybe there is other alternatives I haven't seen?

1.if you want to use multiple storefronts( origin steam, uplay) then you must go with the OS that the most game support. That is Windows.

2.SteamOS is a good option. Netflix like interface, large array of games ease to use, and you do not need to create a new one

3. Console or lower price. Create a box that can play games at 1080p 30FPS/60FPS locked with high (not ultra) settings. Less people care about graphics than you would think, and if they do, they get a different solution, that is more expensive.

4.Small decently powered PC to play games at 1080p cheap. Let say 270, G3258 and 8 GB of RAM and extremely easy to use. Literally plug and play, and an OS that is well locked, so it is hard to break, easy to use

Windows was another option I looked at, just seemed that it took to much RAM to run its system.

It for sure would be more cost effective to just use Steam OS, I just find for people who want a true gaming machine, there missing out on games for example Dragon Age Inquisition is a Origins exclusive which you can't get on the Steam Machine.

I was thinking of a multiple console options but if people have a big budget it makes more sense to just make a custom PC.

When I was doing research on the chips I almost went for the G3258, it is an awesome option for a low cost. However I got a good deal on a CPU that can really pull it out.
