280x or gtx 960?

My brother is looking for a new graphics card as his gtx 580 died on him. He said he was going around the ~$200 price range. I told him the gtx 960 or r9 280x/285 are good choices. He made the decision on the 280x because it has 3gb of vram apposed to the 2gb on the other two, but what do you guys think would be good for him?

He plays games like H1Z1 and Diablo on 1080p.

His build is somewhere along the lines of fx-6100, 16gb of ram, 1000 watt psu, and a sabertooth mobo of some sort

The 280X is much better than the 960. He made a good choice.

wow that PSU is way overkill. I'll suggest the 285 so he can get another one then get a freesync monitor in the future @Wufflez. ^-^

Either would have been fine, but the 280X was ultimately the best choice for power.

I know right? Many of his components were bought on a whim. He's not much for upgrading; he just likes to buy something for many years to come

there is more pure power on the 280x, but more quality on the 960 imho

 

i dont know if it is just gigabyte but i have had to rma my 280x THREE (3) times, so i would suggest buing from someone like sapphire who are good with warranty
