This made my blood boil.

I was working on a clients prebuilt and the bios was locked to uefi boot mode , windows 8 option.

I could NOT select or use any bootable media and i could not install any os other than windows 8.

Now I am quite tech savy and it took me a while to find this option , it was hidden deep on the bios , i had to toggle everything to "legacy" mode

so i could format the pc.

Someone who has no idea what they are even doing and has no understanding of pcs falls for the hooks of the

prebuilt and cant even format when shit is slow , which is what was happening to this client.

Completely disgraceful.

I was able to clean format the pc and i am happy to say my non cluttered installation of windows 7 instead of

windows 8.1 is about 15 minutes faster at rebooting.

What a load of bloatware ridden crap.

Microsoft has published the hardware requirements that manufacturers must follow if they want to slap a "Designed for Windows 8" sticker onto their systems. In among many innocuous requirements—multitouch systems must support at least five points of touch, there must be at least 10 GB of free space available to the user, and more—are a set of requirements for Windows 8 systems' firmware. These requirements have reignited Linux users' fears that they will be locked out of Windows 8 hardware.

The concerns revolve around the use of a new feature called UEFI Secure Boot. All Windows 8 systems that meet Microsoft's certification requirements must use UEFI firmware with Secure Boot enabled.

Not the issue.

The default options on the motherboard dont allow you to install ANY os other the one that comes with the prebuilt.

You need to have some know how and know how to change it.

I wanted and installed windows 7.

Asus can shove it up their asses for all I care.

The user should be able to install any os they want and they locked it by default.

I should have installed linux tbh.

Mmm that might be not bios, but hdd problem... They're patching boot sectors somehow, this is popular on modern laptops.

I solved this by wiping hdd with acronic live usb. You can use current windows key again, because it's tied to the mobo, which u didn't replace.

Tell that client this is what happens when you get a prebuilt. I think it would be enough for him to want to learn how to build one ^^

I have offered him to build  his next pc free of charge and pick out the pieces.

I am a very good builder .

Plz gibe pat

How is that even possible? Can you not just unplug the HDD, boot to bios, then plug in the HDD? (not sure if that's safe)

Seems like a REALLY shitty thing to do.

You just have to change the bios to legacy mode.

The problem is that most people dont know that.

Its a scummy practise that microsoft impose.d

Its called windows 8 safe boot , or windows 8 bootloaders.
