Basically I can't really hit good overclocks (1.35v for 4.6Ghz and still unstable sometimes) so would de-lidding help this?

I love getting low temps and for my H110 that I will be getting it wouldn't have to work as hard.

The vice method seems really easy so is it worth it?

Plz give all pros and cons.

It can help but don't do it if you have no idea what you're doing with the delidding process.

That's why I made this thread..

Unless you trust yourself enough, or have enough cash to straight up buy a replacement, i would say don't do it.

If you cock it up you will break that chip and end up without a working PC.

Delidding isnt gonna give you better overclocking results unless you're limited by temps (thermal throttling) rightnow.

id be careful with that as i have attempted this in the past just to see what i could achieve. and not realizing that the shroud was soldered to the die and yanked the die right off the board. it was a sad day for me cuase i had to use an old single core semperon for a while till i could afford a new 6core phenom. but that said id probaly attempt this again for my fx9590 if it ment a few less degrees under load.

personaly i find sanding the lid down to the die works just the same and you get a little extra safty of the rest of the lid preventing the die from cracking. this actualy takes a long time and a lot of sand paper but is much safer.

Could you give points as to why?

Thanks :)

Unless your CPU is running too hot when OCing, de-lidding will not make your CPU overclock more

Also the risk of damage is too high for very little gain unless EXTREME ocing (which I also think is dumb)

Ah ok.

I kind of knew I was going to get a bad chip from the start tbh because I get extremely bad luck.

So the only way to MAYBE get a better overclock is to get a new CPU really..

All I wanted was 4.7Ghz or 4.8Ghz at 1.35v :'(

well the difference in performance is negligible if its just 0.2 to 0.3 in difference IMO

If you've already got a soldered IHS (Such as an FX 8320 like the one I have) there's absolutely no point to delidding it as you'll just ruin the die. I did lap mine which gave a decent improvement in temps. I say if you're willing to take the risk then go for it. (Note: if your CPU runs cool already there's absolutely no point.)
