Hi all

I have a MSI GS60 laptop. Today I installed Ubuntu version 14.04 LTS alongside Windows 8 to dual boot. After prolonged use, I decided that I did not like the OS. I thought that Windows was cluttered anyway, so I decided to restore my computer as if I had just bought it.

I left the room for a bit to let the process complete and when I came back I found a terminal like screen with the text,

"GNU GRUB version 2.02~beta-9ubuntu 1

Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions."

Now whenever I boot up my computer, it switches on to this screen. I have absolutely no idea what to do and how to fix this and return to Windows. I posted here first as I know how reliable this forum is.

Please help ASAP, or direct me to another place I may be able to receive assistance. I'm desperate.

Regards

Alex

Try following this tutorial: https://neosmart.net/wiki/fix-mbr/

Use the Windows 8/8.1 section.

My Current Build:

when you install ubuntu, it installs grub alongside with it on the MBR, meaning it replaces the bootloader used by windows. i'm guessing the factory reset didnt take the MBR into count, meaning you're stuck with grub, and now grub has no idea where the hell that windows install went after the restore.

this is fixable by letting grub update its options. issue: this needs to be done from an installed linux OS as far as i remember correctly.

EDIT reposted repost is repost...

Check your other thread that you made first. I gave a suggestion there.

That's odd, I'm positive I put the right link. Anyway @OP go back to your original thread.

OK there is definitely some kind of glitch going on, just change the "328708" in the URL I posted to "328706" and it should work. The OP should know what thread I'm  talking about anyways since they are the poster...

I am sorry, I did not realize that I had posted two topics.

I do not have the original Windows installation cd because it came pre loaded.

The Easy Recovery Essentials option costs money. Any ideas?

Try this possibly??

Hi

I have a problem. I have created the installation media on a flash drive but whenever I boot the computer with it it comes up with a screen saying

Recovery

Your pc needs to be repaired

The boot configuration data for your pc is missing or contains errors

File: \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD

Error code 0x000000f

You will need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have any installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer.

Press ESC for UEFI Firmware Settings

When I press escape I have no idea what is going on. Any advice would be much appreciated.
