So I'm trying to piece together the ultimate bang for the buck PC and I find the xeon 1241 very very intriguing. You get the same specs as the 4790 (non K) for about $20 cheaper. I like the idea of very outlandish specs in my PC, so saying I have an overclocked xeon would be very cool to me. But is it possible? I saw this video were linus overclocked a xeon e5 by just raising the voltage and base clock, so can the same be applied to a xeon e3? If this is possible I think it would be awesome, or am I just making a bad decision and should just go with a 4790k? (And no I don't want an i5, I have a 2500k and its not ideal for what I'm doing and a 4690k wouldn't be a upgrade to me)

You can only do base OC which can be very iffy and won't gain much performance.

What is the iffy part? If you've watched the linus video I'm talking about, he was able to push his xeon very far, obviously its a much higher quality chip, so he was able to do that with more chances of stability. I just want to know if I could get it up to 4790k specs, so 4.0ghz.

Because base clocks also control the PCI-E bus and memory speed as well as SATA controllers. It can make things very unstable.

Ok I can see how that would be bad, so would you suggest just getting a 4790k?

What all will you be doing with this PC?

Use with a lot of adobe programs and AAA gaming.

For most things the 4790K will be enough. Just grab a good cooler and OC it some more.

You'll only be able to overclock by setting the FSB (if your motherboard allows you to). Some motherboards may allow you to force the CPU into running at the maximum turbo-boost frequency.
