Business Workstation 800-1000$ w/ Dual Monitors

1. Budget & Location

Goal = 800$ wiggle room if I am convinced it's worth spending the extra money

Located in the U.S.

2. Aim

Web browsing + Office

3. Monitors

x2 Displays HD? minimum x20 inch (My co-worker, when I asked, told me he wants High Def, I am not going to argue with him as I do not know for sure and am researching.. but I cannot see how this would help him.. though, he may like to just watch videos on netflix/youtube in HD.

To increase work performance. Being able to have a document or e-mail on one monitor and what I am working on the main monitor would be fantastic. I really don't see the user of this machine going pat 2 displays.

4. Peripherals

Windows 8.1 is needed along with Office 365

(I have the 2010 office, but am not sure if I can upgrade to 365, or if there is a version of windows bundled with it.. I am looking into all of that, this very moment).

He uses http://www.carbonite.com/ cloud for backing up everything. All of his documents, designs, information VITAL to his business. I believe it's worth considering a secondary HD. I'm thinking he would use his primary HD, and the cloud to back up constantly; then the secondary drive used to back up every 30-90 days. Sandboxing from the cloud, in case something ever went wrong. I'm not familiar with carbonite. This could be overkill.

5. Why are you upgrading?

It's time. It's a dual core 8 gig H.P. built in the 90's it feels like.

He was 2 seconds from buying the Dell Inspiron 3000 Desktop http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/949691/Dell-Inspiron-3000-Desktop-Computer-With/?cm_mmc=PLA-_-Google-_-Computers_Tablets-_-949691-VQ6-43512513356-VQ16c-VQ17-pla_multichannel-VQ18-online-VQ19-949691-VQ20-87401583854-VQ21-

I convinced him I could do better with his money. I am on a mission to prove I am right.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/WRvrhM copy/paste from another thread.. looks close, just need monitors. Will keep improving as I learn/research more

EDIT: I do have a MSI Geforce GTX 550 TI laying around.. I could possibly use this in his build.

Yes, everything is in the budget.  I don't need to go big on the actual workstation, I figured that would be the least expensive, estimated 400-500$ w/ 8.1

You're the man.  I figured the 2 cheapest monitors were 160 $ ea 20 in HD with shipping.  So that was 320, leaving 480-580$ for the rest

Thank you very much, wow those monitors are inexpensive.  Are there any pro/con's you see to this build.. anything upgrading further would accomplish?

Also, why intel for cpu, I am a newbie but I thought the word on the street was amd was better for low-mid tier machines?  Just less expensive and does the same thing?

Also, I forgot I have a Geforce Gtx 550 TI I could use in his machine.  It's a large card so the case /mobo would need to be able to handle it.. but that would save 98$  Not sure if it's worth it, your thoughts?

Thanks again!  I can tip you on steam, with hats/skins/etc if you message me your steam ID

as long as the 550ti has at least 2 outputs its more than enough and the case should be big enough

really this is more than enough for his usage

if it were for gaming or say video editing  it can easily support the highest end GPU without bottlenecks

steam has the same username

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

This build does not have an i5. Realistically an i3 is usually sufficient for most business applications. It does include an ssd that should be large enough for pretty much everything. The included hdd could then be used for frequent backups of critical data with cloud backup used less frequently. The on-chip gpu will be quite adequate to drive the two monitors.

You could do this and just replace the gpu with the 550ti. I would also recommend getting 2 of the same sized hard drives so you can just set up a a raid 1 and forget about it.

No such thing as forgetting about a raid array. They break. Sometimes frequently. They are NOT backup. RAID is designed for fault tolerance not for backing up data.

1. There is forgetting because until it breaks you don't have to maintain it.

2. He is backing up with carbonite so it's already taken care of.

These are the three I'm reviewing at this time. Again, if anyone would like tips via items purchasable with steam wallet, or keys for cs:go/tf:2/dota 2 LMK.. Thanks again

Thanks so much everyone!  I am still researching and looking at everything.  I already bought the x2 21.5 in HD monitors from amazon.  That sale seemed unbeatable and I've never had problems returning to amazon.. so I figured I could re-tune my monitor knowledge later and if they were no good return them.

Trying to have everything ordered by tomorrow at the latest.

Coding isn't my thing
