So, in a few hours I have the option of picking up an Tyan motherboard with dual Xeon E5-2620 for ~$550.

I needed a new workstation machine anyway to replace my aging dual 775 build.

Only issue is that the board size is SSI EEB, and I don't know of any cases off the top of my head that support that standard. I saw some Phanteks cases, but I'm not a fan of the design.

So any thoughts? Anybody with WS/dual CPU boards out there want to chime in?

CoolerMaster Cosmos II. I'm running a similar setup in one of those. See the Leviathan.

SilverStone Grandia GD07 supports SSI EEB

Might not work, the mobo might bump in the hdd cage. Way to tight.

A bit too pricey for what I need. This is really not going to be a 'flashy' build.

The ft04 looks nice. Hopefully Microcenter has some in stock.

The Fractal Design Define XL will fit the motherboard, despite what the specs say.

EDIT:

This. No modding needed? That's a EEB board not CEB? If so, I'm doing this in a heartbeat.

Ft04 is better.

It's a great case.

I have ft05

Both have nice aluminum

So. I picked up the board today. I probably won't be using this for my workstation though due to Tyan making the board 'enhanced' SSI EEB. So, it'l replace my file server with dual X5570. Luckily, my server chassis does accept the format of the board.

Now, I've seen some Supermicro C612 chipset dual socket boards that is EATX form factor. That being said, it uses the EATX mounting holes and is the maximum EATX size (12"x13").

That being said, I could use the case I was intending to buy in the first place (Corsair 750D or 900D).

Thoughts?

While I'm asking, anybody ever water cool Xeon CPUs? Normal LGA 2011-3 blocks should still fit, right?

Also, @Whaler_99, mind chiming in? I know Whaler has one or two multi-CPU motherboards.

I used these for mine - overall very inexpensive and amazing build quality.

Open frame cases are awesome! :)

As for water cooling, there is zero use of that. Most systems are water cooled for "e peen", silence, etc. The cost of the blocks is expensive and xeon chips run hot, so you going to need a bunch of rads and fans. I would recommend spending that money on some of the Noctua coolers that might fit, or replace existing fans with Noctua, then you have a much quieter system for a lot less costs.

Is that how you run your folding rig(s)?

I was using those open frame cases when I was folding with 4P boxes!

Interesting, and thanks for replying!

I already have my current system water cooled, I knew the Xeon chips give out a metric ton of heat, (I have an older dual-X5570 file server that basically acts as a baseboard heater in the winter :P). You do bring up a good point, and that is that water cooling isn't efficient if I don't have enough rad space (which I wont in all likelihood). That being said, normal LGA 2011-3 cpu cooler should still fit without a problem? I'm eyeing on getting a Supermicro board in the X10DAi/X10DAC/X10DAX lineup.

I'll just have to be careful with CPU cooler size and RAM height.

Unfortunately, since this will be on my desk, I can't necessarily use the open frame like you have. Luckily, since those Supermicro boards are E-ATX (not EE-ATX) they should fit in a larger variety of full tower cases.

Yes, that type of cooler should fit, although I am not sure if the socket between a version 1 and 3 is significations different physically. A couple of the Noctua coolers support LGA 2011 and you just need to request the mounting bracket and they will ship it to you free. Maybe contact them asking if it will fit.
