Okay, so you can Instant flash bios on many boards these days, but I'm curious how you actually do that with a USB stick.

The reason I ask is it would removed the guesswork in does this board have bios supporting CPU X.

Some boards also have an instant flash key when booting up the machine before you go into the bios even, but what about those that don't?

for most boards to peform the BIOS update

you need to go into BIOS is start the flashing

unless you have a board like Asus which support flashing without CPU

you will need a cheap CPU and RAM to boot to BIOS for the flashing to begin

and also you need to use a USB 2.0 thumbdrive formatted with FAT32 plugged to a USB 2.0 slot

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

the boards which support CPU-less BIOS flashing are the high end versions

like the Z97 Pro or WS and the ROG line

so essentially you need a cpu to get to the splash screen in order to instant flash unless you have a high end boards that supports cpu less flashing.

so if the bios was updated for a chip to run on it if there are previous versions you are pretty much screwed without another cpu for those motherboards, interesting.

nope sadly

the back IO should have a BIOS flashback button

if you look at the ROG boards, there is a press-able button which is a circular arrows

yea that how it works

for example the Pentium will work on a H81 board

provided the BIOS in the board is the more recent version

otherwise the board will not even boot with the older BIOS

the real question usually is then "what version bios does it ship with?"

and to that often we have no clue :/

Quickly update your BIOS from a USB flash drive before entering the OS. It only takes a few clicks, with no floppy disk or an OS-based flash utility.

found this...but otherwise not much to read on their site

Yeah, that's the only way to go unless you can contact the manufacturer and confirm what bios it will ship with

the box will indicated the production date and REV like Gigabyte

that way you might have a rough guess of the BIOS REV
