So I just finished building a computer for my mom. Start to boot it, and it says it didn't boot properly, I just decided to hit start windows normally. It got to the windows is starting screen and crashed. After an hour or two of troubleshooting, I found that it was the hard drive itself and not the bios not supporting the CPU like I previously thought. So what are some suggestions for fixing this. I know I can try and do a reinstall of Windows but I want some back ups in case that doesn't work.

Current System: CPU - I5-6500 | Motherboard - ASRock H170M-ITX/ac | RAM - Mushkin Blackline 16GB DDR4 @ 2400mHz | GPU - EVGA 1060 3GB | Case - Fractal Design Nano S | Storage - 250GB 850 EVO, 3TB Barracuda | PSU - EVGA 450W 80+ Bronze | Display - AOC 22" 1080p IPS | Cooling - Phanteks PH-TC12DX_BK | Keyboard - Cooler Master QuickFire Rapid(MX Blues) | Mouse - Logitech G602 | Sound - Schiit Stack | Operating System - Windows 10

The OG System: I3-2370M @ 2.4 GHz, 750GB 5400 RPM HDD, 8GB RAM @1333Mhz, Lenovo Z580 Laptop (Ubuntu 16.04 LTS).

Peripherals: G602, AKG 240, Sennheiser HD 6XX, Audio-Technica 2500, Oneplus 5T, Odroid C2(NAS).

I dealt with the same problem on a friends computer. It seems to be that something happens to the Windows files, where it shows the windows logo, restarts the PC, and then give you the options screen. It's a loop.

The only real way to fix it is to reinstall windows on the same drive. It'll back up the previous OS's files on a folder called Windows.old

Do you have a windows disc/usb and an external to back it up on? If so, you can transfer using cmd prompt easily. If you can boot into safe mode, you can do this way also.

EDIT: You can do a "refresh" in windows 8, reinstalling only the system files, and some desktop programs, leaving personal files. The above was if you meant in-case the refresh also failed in some way.

It only keeps the old files if you only do an Upgrade installation. Normally I delete the partition and create a fresh one which would not result in the old files being stored.

No, that's not true. It puts all the files in a folder called Windows.old either way.

If you delete the partition and start over, how are the old files still "there"? I've done multiple installations of Windows and have done what I said I did and never had the Windows.old folder. The only time I had it was when I chose Upgrade. Sure, if you do a Custom installation and don't mess with the partitioning and just reinstall Windows, you will end with the Old folder.

You can do a fresh install on windows and have everything moved to windows.old...but you cant if you also reformat the drive/partition.

Ok. I reinstalled Windows and have it booted up. The only problem now is that there is no driver for the ethernet port... I'll be back.
