If you don't mind waiting then wait.

Even if the 300 series cards turn out to be a waste of time their release will drive down the price of current graphics cards.

Think the r9 300 cards as 1 behind a current r9 200 cost for around the same price (maybe a bit higher) For example a R9 380x would sort of be a R9 290x at the price (sort of) of a 280x.

The next gen cards are NOT rebrands however, (as of now i believe). To get to the point, if you want a "r9 290x" for the price of a "r9 280x", then wait, but other than that, if that doesn't seem compelling to you buy a 970 or R9 290X if it's in your budget. (100 - R7 260X GTX 750TI  |150 R9 270X  | 200 R9 280X | 300 R9 290X GTX 970)

edit: also yes, the 200 cards will probably lower in price abit aswell.

i was thinking about the GTX 970 but is the memory issue really a problem

Not unless you need to push serious pixels, like 4k, or triple 1440p displays. It really is only an issue if that 3.5 GB fills up. You'll probably only hit that on a AAA game even at those resolutions.

Most games you wont, but at HIGH AA levels, or high resolution levels you might.

That memory issue will never affect your performance for what you are going to doing. That issue only affects if you are aiming for extremely high resolution, and even then it is barely noticeable because even with the extra .5GB you would need SLI at that point anyway.

so there wouldn't be much problems with 1080p?

I can't see any occuring, unless ubisoft does another assassin's creed stuffup, and demands that you push "x" amount of pixel's to make their game more cinematic.

No seriously 1080p won't even push 3GB at the moment.

Nope! :) Unless its SUPER heavily modded Skyrim. I've heard that can be weird.

mainly because while the mods are optimised, they're quite often not optimised to run in the weird combinations the community asks it too. Imagine loading up a pixel, getting told you don't need it because the next mod in line doesn't need it, the one after that does, etc.... That's one very confused GPU.

Ahh. That makes more sense!

honestly you're definitely best off waiting, the release shouldn't be too far away barring any unforeseen delays and no matter what you win by waiting. nvidia will have to respond to the release, likely by reducing prices on some cards, possibly releasing new cards, the amd cards could end up being quite impressive and what not.

the 970 is a great card for 1080p and you shouldn't have much issue (the only game i've heard of that does is shadow of mordor with the ultra texture packs). and it isn't likely to drop in price since its already so cheap. but wait a few months, put a bit more money on the side and see what happens. amd launches are pretty predictable by and large, amd beats nvidia's best performing card on the market with cheaper card/s, nvidia cuts prices a little, then releases a new card to take the performance crown. i'd say wait and see, put some extra money on the side for when the 980 drops in price a bit (very likely to happen) or for an amd card that gets released.

but its your dough, your call. if you'd rather get it done and over with now, the 970 is far from a bad choice for 1080p and like i said, i can't imagine it going for any less than it is right now.

well, in my case, waiting for a release requires a lot of patience..new release of anything takes a year before it gets here for sale, it gives me more time to review benchmarks and choose which would best suit my needs..

advice would be to avoid that upgrade itch..
