You can change it to £. If you sign up you get a 14 day trial and you can see if you like it or not. My brother uses it for his site and he pays £70 (a year) for hosting and the domain.

Edit

It is good, but only if you want a professional looking site. If it is a more casual site then it does not look as good.

I believe you can use it OK, however you need to think about the speed of the site should you go ahead.

Could be wrong, but I believe that all their hosting will be done in the US. That means your site would be hosted in the US. Now, not a big problem but you've got to think about how this would affect your SEO, as well as a slight performance hit with it being over in the US. If your customers are over in the US, then not a problem!

Yeah, I was gonna make a site but the themes/the way that square space sites look are too professional and it would not really be appropriate for what the site was used for.

You can make the site look however you want, you can even edit the CSS and HTML!!

Yeah, but the reason for square space is to make site building easy, not changing everything in the default theme. Why not make a normal site with CSS and HTML and get a better host instead of using square space.

Because its still really easy to use, especially when it comes to quickly editing, updating and posting new content, the hosting is very good, and it includes ecommerce etc

Editing a bit of code is not the same as writing a whole website in code (I have no html or css knowledge and have managed to edit a few lines with ease just googling for code to copy and paste)

I just don't see how you cant use their templates for "casual" websites.. whatever "casual" websites are
