I'm looking to build a mid tier, non gaming PC for an engineering team at my school. We do lots of 3D modeling in a software called Solidworks. My question is, will this CPU/Mobo have an integrated GPU.  I've never made an AMD system and dont know how they work in that dept.

Depends on the motherboard, which you didn't post :P

well I feel foolish for not posting my partlist.

Lol, but that motherboard doesn't have an onboard GPU so you will need to get a GPU.

Any particular reason you are looking at a AMD build?

The FX cpu's might be terrible for gaming("terrible" lol), but for workstation and server applications they are actually pretty good. I breifly had a 4670K but moved to a 8320 and saw a huge performance leap with VM's and 3D rendering.

yes. we also run a software called MATLAB that crunches lots of numbers to run simulations. So I want to go with an APU with a higher clockspeed per core since I wont need the hyperthreads, at least thats the hypothesis.

Well yeah, they were pretty much designed for those tasks. Still leaves the TDP though.

there will be no games played on this so thats not an issue. Just lots of simulations and simple-ish 3D renders

AM3+ doesn't. The FM series and i series from Intel do.

AM3+ CPUs don't have integrated graphics, but that's because integrated graphics on AM3+ is old-school-style built into the northbridge of the motherboard.

My AM3+ motherboard has integrated Radeon HD 4250 graphics.

Well if you want to save $5 there is cheaper ram available from Newegg.

Unfamiliar with the programs the OP would be using, would the OP benefit from additional cores?

Example... others can probably do better.

I wish we could use more cores, MATLAB is an iterative software. meaning "use output value from equation x to compute equation y" so it  makes more sense to have a faster per core clockspeed. As for solidworks it can use multiple cores when it does certain functions. So most of the time we will be using 1 core.

the current apu's are based on largely the same core design as the fx line of cpu's but because of the igpu taking up allot of space the best you can get is a quad core (with no l3 cache).

if solidworks is multi threaded id recommend a 970 board like a gigabyte ud3p or even a 970 gaming and an 8320 which you can then overclock to 4.5 like i do.

http://www.javelin-tech.com/blog/2011/01/solidworks-multi-threading/

it may also be useful to get a prosumer card, even a low end one such as a firepro, do not get a gaming card as the drivers are not meant to be used for this, while the hardware on amd isnt cut down as much as nvidias cards the added binning and possible ecc memory would be a benefit.

line generation etc are multi threaded so would benefit to an fx6 or fx8 in those aspects

actually rotating a drawn iamge around would be best with a discrete gpu like a v4900 or w5000 depending on budget.

970 am3+ chipsets DO NOT have a gpu built in to the cpu or board either way.

you could use an apu (nothing with an athlon name) for its igpu if you're ona  super tight budget but performance overall will be much less than say an fx6 and v4900.

8-16gb of ram (nothing special) will also go a long way.

hard drives and ssd's are cheap.
