The AHCI controller is set so the drives are hotswappable. To disable you should be able to disable Hot Plug (atleast that what's it called on my board) in the bios

If you had an Ubuntu based system, you can disengage the OS partition/drive.

interesting, my Pc starting showing the safely remove hardware notification thing permanently ever since I switched to Windows 8, even though there's actually nothing in it (unless there actually is a removable device). Doesn't cause any problems at all, it's just kind of annoying...
