So, i want to get into Twitch streaming off my PS3 and maybe other consoles. I have a main computer that is more than capable of doing this, but i dont want to move the consoles to my computer desk.

My NUC is what i use as a steam streaming machine and its plugged into my TV where my PS3 and other consoles are. Ultimately, is the NUC capable of handling a twitch stream at at least 720p while capturing footage from a console? I dont want to record footage at the same time, just stream it.

I have the i5 Haswell NUC, the one with the 2.5 HDD bay. 1.3GHz dual core i5, 8GB RAM and a Vertex 4 SSD. For in-home streaming, it works flawlessly over gigabit ethernet. I also have a Mac mini available for this as well. Its a mid-2012 model with the 2.5GHz dual core i5, 4GB RAM. I could easliy put the NUC RAM into it so that wouldn't be a problem. I'd rather not use the Mac mini, though.

Anyone who has any experience with this, please assist.

Thank you!

If you have an Intel processor in your main rig that has Intel HD graphics in it, then you can use Quick Sync to process the stream. Great use of resources that you may already have.

If you want to use the NUC as a dedicated stream box, then hardware-wise, it should be more than powerful enough to stream, even at 1080p. I'm not sure how it works, as I have no experience actually streaming, but I know the basics of what kind of hardware you need to actually do it.

i'm trying to piece together a picture of what you want to do.

am i right with this:

gaming on console -> screen captured by nuc -> streamed to twitch.

because if thats what you want, you'll need a HDMI in, which NUCs dont have.

My thoughts excatly. Capturing video on another machine than with what its being displayed on will require capture card. Which eventually will take part of rendering load anyway. Like using Livegamer Portable with laptop.

i actually forgot about the little USB capture card thingies, if OP would *want* to spend the money of a decent capture pc on a NUC and an usb capture card he could do it. (as far as i remember they are quite expensive, not sure how PCIe cards compare to it tho.)

Oh but wouldn't it be easier?

Probably, but some people want to stream without a whacking great console on their desk :P

I have lots of impractically wacky ways of doing things, just because they work and finding more efficient ways of doing it is boring and time-consuming.

All for the sake of not being mainstream.

Thanks for all the replies. All good stuff!

I COULD move my consoles but i really dont want to as its all properly set up at my tv and my computer desk is limited on space,

Intel quicksync didnt even occur to me. Ive heard it works really well so i will probably give it a try. I wanted some ideas before i went out and picked up a capture card as they are a tad pricey. But if the card handles some of the encoding, it should work great.

Again, thanks for all the help. Its much appreciated :). If anyone has any more advice, please let me know.

Also, if you havent tried it, steam inhome streaming is amazing. It runs pretty well on wifi with some minor delays here and there. I switched my NUC from wifi to gigabit and the improvement was incredible. Try it out if you can acquire a small form PC. For your TV

Curious OP, which NUC do you have? I just set mine up last night. Now looking to do the Steam in-home as well to it for a few games I've been itching to play :D

I have this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856102055

It was the best one available for the price under the haswell chips. There was an i7 model but that was way too expensive. They are amazing for inhome streaming. Use gigabit Ethernet if you can. Wifi is good but choppy at times.

Mine is on ethernet already. So I agree. Any device in my home is wired if I can. The only wireless of course are the iPhones/iPads and the Roku Stick in the bedroom.

I have the i3-4010U version. The slimmer version as well, so I couldn't fit an SSD into it. Had to purchase an mSATA drive. Which apparently, is near impossible! I ordered one from eBay and had it in a week for a fraction of the cost local, so that helped. Now I will be seeing what it can do to stream some games from my gaming PC.
